The College Application Process: How to get There from Here 1

Distinguished Achievement Application DAP: 3 years same foreign language, 4 sciences not including IPC, PLUS 4 advanced, college-level measures (AP test scores, Dual Credit, National Merit, Articulated CTE Courses) Your counselor will meet with you to give you the application during your Senior conference. 2

Review from 11th Grade Assignments from last Spring: Research colleges/Visit campuses Take SAT and/or ACT with Writing Create and save resume Athletes 3

College Applications/ONLINE Texas public 4-year colleges: Many applications opened August 1 st Use the Fall 2017 application for undergraduates Follow instructions and PROOFREAD before you hit “submit”. Allow others to PROOFREAD. Deadlines are extremely important!! Check often for correspondence from your college 7

Other Applications Out-of-state? Visit the college website Private? Visit the college website 2-year? Visit the college website Can’t find it? See Your Counselor Selective/Private: Some Texas private schools use Applytexas: (Baylor, DBU,HBU,Schreiner,Southwestern,U of Dallas, TCU) 8

Transcripts OFFICIAL transcripts must be sent from Klein Collins directly to college or scholarship committee. Fill out a request form (available online and in counseling office.) Give two week advance notice. Transcripts are $2.00 each Give form and cash to the registrar. Send transcripts for admissions now; send final transcript when you accept admissions offer--final transcripts are mailed in June. A final transcript must be requested! 9

GPA/Rank Preliminary rank: 784 seniors Top 10% Top 25% Top 50% Our GPA scale is considered a 4.0+ weighted scale Final ranking released late February 10/2/

Letters of Recommendation These are not mandatory; check college requirements Select someone that knows you well ! Complete the Student and Parent Information Form ( Available in the counseling office or on the KCHS website) Give a copy of the each form to each person from whom you request a letter—2 week advance notice!!! Keep a copy for your files Provide a STAMPED, ADDRESSED envelope if being mailed. 10/2/

Financial Aid Loans: you pay back/must qualify Grants: you do not pay back/must qualify Work Study—employment through the university/must qualify Create a FSA ID (username and password) for Apply in OCTOBER — Parents must have 2015 tax info ready. (Free money is first come/first served at many colleges). 10/2/

Scholarships Scholarships: FREE money—you do not pay back Check Klein Collins counseling website USE Search: employers, churches, organizations, and college financial aid offices, etc. There are few “Full Rides”—many students borrow and work while in college “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Beware of scams! 10/2/

Texas A&M December 1st - Application and Scholarship deadline Top 10% Auto Admit Top 25% must have: 1360 SAT (660 CR/ 620 Math) or 30 ACT (27 English and math) Academic Admits 13% 10/2/

Lone Star College Application : TSI placement test No SAT or ACT test score required – but the scores can be used for placement A Lonestar Rep visits KCHS several times a month THE HONOR’S COLLEGE CHANCELLOR’S FELLOWS A select few will be selected for this program awards package includes up to 15 hours tuition/fees, books, and a $600 spending allowance – per semester. 10/2/

WHAT IS THE ASVAB TEST? A career exploration and aptitude test WHEN SHOULD I TAKE IT? 10 th, 11th or 12th grade WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH THE MILITARY? The Department of Defense sponsors it and scores are used to determine acceptance and military jobs for new military recruits but that is not its only purpose! DO I HAVE TO BE INTERESTED IN THE MILITARY TO TAKE IT? Absolutely not! It is a tool for ANY student to assist in career planning, whether you are interested in the military or not! WHAT BENEFITS DOES IT HAVE FOR ME? A personalized career planning system and free access to career planning software. ASVAB IS FREE AND DURING THE SCHOOL DAY SIGN UP TO TAKE IT IN THE COUNSELING OFFICE….see Mrs. Grimm
