Main Idea The main idea of my section is the effects of this disorder

What is the definition of Bulimia? Bulimia- A serious eating disorder that occurs chiefly in females, is characterized by compulsive overeating usually followed be self-induced vomiting or laxative or diuretic abuse, and is often accompanied by guilt and depression.

 This disorder is most common in adolescent girls. No one knows the exact cause of bulimia. Physiological, genetic, trauma, family, society, and cultural factures can play a role, but it is probably due to one or more factor.

Effects Bulimics typically eat low nutrition, high calorie foods like Ice cream and bread, which makes them undernourished and have bad hair, nails, and skin. It also causes mineral and vitamin deficiencies which can lead to chronic kidney problems and even cause kidney failure. What people don’t know.. Sadly but true, 10% of bulimics will eventually die from its effects, mostly from potassium deprivation, which the heart to stop which can cause DEATH!

How do you treat Bulimia?  There are a few ways that may successfully treat bulimia but the patient must know that bulimia may not be fully treated, but if it is, it can take up to 4 years, if the patient cooperates.

The Options: –Support groups, The least expensive approach. –Cognitive Behavioral therapy, which doesn’t respond to support groups. –Drugs, such as antidepressants

Although these actions are done in private, some tests can be done to help diagnose bulimia, like Chem-20 tests, which shows electrolyte imbalances such as dehydration, and dental exams, which show dental cavities and gum infections. Dentists also check the enamel of your teeth for pits and erosions from excessive exposure to stomach acid.

Bulimia is an important subject in health because it shows the repercussions of starting a bad habits, such as purging. It is also important because by people knowing what could happen when they don’t solve there problems in a healthy manner.

 Ailene had a tough life. She was always trying to fit in and make friends, but was teased for not having any. She tried everything like new clothes, makeup- but it didn’t get through to anyone. So one day she decided to purge and lose weight. After doing so, she started to make friends. Ailene made a habit of this. Although she seemed happier on the outside, she was depressed on the inside. Months later she changed her wardrobe and only wore baggy clothes. She started to look sick, and fragile. Her teeth started to erode and she was constantly passing out. Soon after that, she died from dehydration and heart failure.

Section Overview Bulimia nervosa is a very serious eating disorder that is very hard to over come and should be taken seriously.
