One Word, One World Defining Our Year Together Originally created by Janet Ilko San Diego Area Writing Project 2015 Modified by Diana Beam 2016 Wilson Memorial High School

The Question: Have you ever made a New Year’s resolution? You know, set a goal for yourself, your family, your job,…your life? How’d it work out for you? Well, imagine now if instead of all those resolutions, you defined yourself and your year into just one word. Resolutions

According to OneWord365, “It will take intentionality and commitment, but if you let it, your one word will shape not only your year, but also you. It will become the compass that directs your decisions and guides your steps.” Why One Word?

Let’s look at Janet Ilko’s One Word…Intention… What might One Word look like?

The first step is to decide who you are and what kind of school year do you want for yourself? What qualities, character traits, idiosycracies, etc… shape the person you are today and how might these things impact and shape your year? What actions do you want to take in 2016? Can one word really define an entire school year? Janet Ilko selected the word Intention, but as you looked at her video, you can tell that her word really had many different meanings and applications in her life. So one word has depth, it has nuances, and is multifaceted. How To Choose Your Word

OneWord 365 offers some of these suggestions: Fortitude, Be, Relax, Shine, Minimize, Faith, Choose, Transition, Progress, Resolve, Change, Awake, Freedom, Uplift, Imagine, Commit, Different, Live, Adapt, Ambition, New, Dare, Grace, Transformation, Curious, Generous, Reduce, Enjoy, Mindfulness, Together, Breathe, Strength, Momentum, Release, Create, Push, Rebuilding, Health, More, Action, Trust, Possibility, Persistence, Opportunity, Unstoppable, Listen, Joy, Relentless, Truth, Risk, Sacrifice, Embrace, Discover, Love, Invest, Growth, Soar, Brave, Adventure, Focus, Celebrate, Peace, Integrity, Write, Determined, Direction, Learn, Ignite, Purpose, Reflection, Appreciate, Empower, Balance, Forward, Present, Pause, Revel, Optimism, Confidence, Diligence, Courage, Perspective, Connect, Open, Thrive, Believe, Simplify, Finish, Organize… Inspiring Words might be…

The University of the Pacific created One Word Project in 2008 “…as an innovative idea to provide first year students a common point of personal reflection that would help them express their level of self awareness and connect to future aspiration.”One Word Project Another way to think about it… Can the word you select, express a “level of self awareness and connect to your future aspirations” for this school year? You might explore UOP’s One Word Project word suggestions…One Word Project

Qualities Character Traits Idiosycracies Personal Reflections The ultimate ETC… Make a two column list In the second column list Action Words What do you want to accomplish this school year?

Now it’s time to define your word. Look it up, Google it, ask Siri (not all at once please), use a dictionary, use a thesurus, use Pintrest,…explore your word. Reflect, think, decide. Ilustrate your word, map it, make a word cloud, make a video, just like Janet Ilko did, play with it, then own it. Can it be your 365 word? Or, your 180, 200 days word? Is it a word that will shape your life? Be a future aspiration? Define Your Word

You might want to explore The University of the Pacific’s One Word Project. munity/ munity/ Or, Texas A & M’s First Year Leadership Class’s One Word Project. egory/first-year-leadership-class/flc- one-word-projects/ One Word Mentor Texts Or, look at Pam Zuber’s “Okay with Okay.”“Okay with Okay.” Or maybe, New York University’s One Word, One World. One Word, One World.

Hopefully the journey to discovering your One Word has given you time to reflect, pause, and has inspired you to make your One Word meaningful. We will be sharing our One Word selections on Monday, August 8. Please be prepared to share your word with a partner and then we will create a word cloud of ALL our One Words. Sharing Your One Word
