WHAT MTELS ARE REQUIRED? All initial licensure areas require passage of the *Communication and Literacy MTELs (including the Reading Specialists) PLUS: Early Childhood: *Early Childhood MTEL and *Found. of Reading Elementary: *General Curriculum (Multi-subject), *General Curriculum (Math) and *Found. of Read. Rev. 3/29/163

When are the practicum application materials due? For fall semester practica: June 15 For spring semester practica: October 15 Rev. 3/29/166

WHEN DOES THE PRACTICUM BEGIN? After all your application materials have been received, the Office of Field Experience will contact the school principal for placement He or she must assign a ‘Supervising Practitioner’ (formerly called cooperating teacher) who holds either an initial license with three years’ experience or a professional license in your field When we receive official acceptance from the principal, we will contact you and you may begin your practicum. Rev. 3/29/167

YOUR PRACTICUM DOES NOT BEGIN UNTIL YOU ARE NOTIFIED BY AIC Rev. 3/29/168

Special Cases: LICENSURE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD requires 300 hours of practicum experiences on two different levels (100 hours in PreK- K and 200 hours in grades 1-2); one setting must have students with disabilities. 100 hours total must be Full Role. Full role is split 33 hours in PreK-K, and 64 hours in Grades 1-2. LICENSURE IN MODERATE DISABILITIES 300 hours in combined settings of Inclusion and Pull-Out. 100 hours must be Full Role. Minimum 25 hours full role in an inclusion setting. LICENSURE IN READING requires prior teaching for at least one year under an initial license. The practicum is 150 hours. Students must shadow a reading specialist for 30 hours prior to the practicum experience. Rev. 3/29/169

What if I haven’t passed the MTELs? There are two choices: Defer the practicum until all MTELs are passed, or Complete the degree with the ‘non-licensure’ field-based research project. If in the future, you do complete the MTELs, AIC will support you in a practicum for licensure but that would require an additional six-credits for which there could be no financial aid. Rev. 3/29/1610

WHAT IS FULL ROLE ? FULL ROLE (100 hours) IS DEFINED AS: DELIVERY OF A LESSON THAT WAS PLANNED BY THE CANDIDATE. Other categories for logging hours are: OBSERVING INSTRUCTION ASSISTING INSTRUCTION Rev. 3/29/1611

Note: when logging hours… Prep time in school cannot be counted Team prep time may be counted as assisting Prep time at home cannot be counted Lunch time cannot be counted Teacher duties such as bus duty, hall duty, etc. cannot be counted as full role. Rev. 3/29/1612

Suggested Experiences To receive rich and fulfilling experiences in the practicum, Candidates should seek out opportunities such as: Work with ELL Students and other diverse populations if not available in their assigned classroom; Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences; Participate in PTO or other school/district-sponsored meetings. Although not required, these experiences are mandated in the MA Professional Standards for Teachers (PST) as enriching and necessary skills for In-Service Educators. Rev. 3/29/1613

Important: Required SEI/RETELL Endorsement All Candidates who have completed all Program coursework and a Practicum requirement and are to be endorsed for Initial licensure after July 1, 2014, must have taken a state-approved course in SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) either from their school district or from the college. Rev. 3/29/1614

SUMMARY Practicum placements are officially arranged by AIC (not you) Please complete all application materials in a timely manner, before the due date Candidates not working in a district must be fingerprinted (state law) AIC will contact you with your official starting date (AIC ). Begin logging hours on day one. Rev. 3/29/1615

PLEASE BE ADVISED: CORI POLICY Local school districts require candidates undertaking pre- practicum or practicum experiences through the program to undergo a criminal history offender information (CORI) check and a district may determine that a candidate is ineligible for placement based on the outcome of the CORI check. Any candidate who is refused a placement by a district as a result of his/her CORI check is solely responsible for finding his or her own practicum placement which, in the sole discretion of the College, meets the academic requirements of the program; a candidate’s failure to timely identify an alternative practicum placement (by the end of the following semester) meeting the program’s academic standards will result in termination from the program. Rev. 3/29/1617

FINGERPRINTING All practicum candidates who are not working in a school district must be fingerprinted prior to placement in the practicum. Please see details in the Practicum Application. Those already hired in a district will have taken care of this as a requirement of their employment. Rev. 3/29/1618

PLEASE NOTE: In the event that a candidate is asked to leave a practicum placement, it is at the discretion of the college, after a review of the circumstances, as to whether the candidate will receive a second placement. If a second practicum experience is not granted, the candidate will receive an automatic failure for the course. After a period of one semester from the absence of the failed practicum experience, the candidate may petition the Director of Field Experiences for another attempt at a practicum. He or she may or may not be allowed to register for a second attempt. A third opportunity will not be granted. He or she may or may not be allowed to complete the degree with a non-licensure field-based research project. Rev. 3/29/1619
