Did You Know… The electricity used to run an average desktop with a CRT monitor will produces 1,500 pounds of CO 2 a year To absorb this amount of CO 2 it takes trees

Purchasing an Energy- Efficient Computer  Laptops use about 1/10 the amount of energy of a desktop (with a CRT monitor)  Flat screens use about 1/3 the energy of a CRT monitor  Look for the Energy Star logo

How do I decrease the amount of energy my computer uses?

Power-Saving Devices For PCs  Standby Mode –Does not guarantee to save work –Reduces Noise and Energy –Active computer is just a mouse-click away  Hibernate Mode –Will save all work in the RPM –Reduces energy by 98% –Will take about 30 seconds to bring your computer back.

The Setup for PCs

Power-Saving Devices For Macs  Sleep Mode (similar to hibernate) –All hardware except minimal requirements are powered off –Takes about 5 seconds to restore screen

Myth or Fact? Regularly turning on and off your computer will shorten its lifespan MYTH

Here are the facts: - With new technologies, computers are now unaffected by frequent start-ups - For long periods of time, (i.e. nights, weekends, vacations) it is best to turn your computer off - So remember when you turn off the lights at night be sure to turn off your computer as well!

Savings From Turning Off Your Computer  PC (CRT monitor) $70  PC (LCD monitor) $67  Mac desktop $24  Laptop $30

Financial Savings For CC  If all students and faculty members turn off their personal computers every night, CC will save about $138,000 per year.

In Conclusion…  By turning off public computers each night and using their hibernate modes our group’s actions will reduce CC’s footprint by 57 hectares  If everyone at CC turned their computers off at night we could reduce the footprint by 110 more hectares.
