11/18/2012 Owner : SHIV Cypress Confidential Automotive PSoC 3 vs. Freescale S08DZ Motor Control Applications Fail-Safe Simultaneous Control for more motors

2 11/18/2012 Owner : SHIV Cypress Confidential Fail-Safe Motor Control is Critical Automobiles require fail-safe motor control : Needed by motor based components in a vehicle, including : Power doors Power windows Power seats Power mirrors Power sunroof Motor Control should be armed with protection features and fault detection Motors and switches driving the motors are expensive and are rated for large range of currents( A) Failure to detect operations outside the specified range can result in destruction of parts and/or safety hazards Reliable Fault-Detection and fast corrective action Solution should offer protection features and diagnostic outputs Fully compliant with strict automotive networking standards for safety, reliability such as CAN protocol V2.0A/V2.0B Your automobile needs fail-safe Motor Control Power Windows, Power Mirrors Power Doors

3 11/18/2012 Owner : SHIV Cypress Confidential Freescale S08DZ Overview Freescale S08DZ is an 8-bit microcontroller family, targeting automotive market and featuring: 40 MHz S08 CPU 2 Comparators and simultaneous control for 2 motors bit SAR ksps AEC-Q100 and AEC-Q101 qualification Flash up to 128 KB On-chip board debug module Fault Detection Freescale S08DZ128

4 11/18/2012 Owner : SHIV Cypress Confidential Challenges using Freescale S08DZ 1. Simultaneous control of more motors increases costs and decreases system reliability Controlling 4 simultaneous motors will require more analog components and 2 Freescale S08DZs thus increasing board space Additional functions like pulse detection, current monitoring, fault detection require more Freescale S08DZs and/or other ICs Higher # of ICs increases the # of Points of failure (PoF) which reduces the system reliability 2. Increased costs during the design cycle and field updates Any upgrade or change in H-Bridge, H-Bridge driver and motor requires chip replacement Freescale S08DZ has an inflexible I/O system that limits analog and digital customization 3. High power consumption Power saving modes draw a large amount of current decreasing the battery life Have you faced any other challenge ?

5 11/18/2012 Owner : SHIV Cypress Confidential Challenges beyond efficient Motor Control System designs need to incorporate additional functions including Ability to support more motors Runtime configuration of fault detection parameters Protection and Diagnostic Features These require additional ICs from multiple vendors which increases cost, decreases reliability and increases complexity Ease of design and development Any change in part leads to complex development and qualification cycles Designers prefer customizable architectures which can cater to different scenarios, thus skipping requalification Solutions need to come with easy-to-use design tools What else is important to you?

6 11/18/2012 Owner : SHIV Cypress Confidential The Solution You Need A reliable and cost-effective solution that : Supports simultaneous control of many motors Provides flexible and customizable I/O system for easy field updates Provides excellent power saving modes Integrates additional functions like fault detection and recovery Allows for easy development and debug Automotive PSoC 3 solution is the solution you need: Supports up to 4 comparators and integrates more functions reducing BOM cost and # of PoFs Provides customized motor control configurations minimizing design costs Delivers superior power saving modes drawing current in nanoAmpere range Integrates additional functions like fault detection and recovery, protection and diagnostic features on the same chip Enables easy development and debug using the ‘drag-and drop’ PSoC Creator tool PSoC Design Block Diagram Automotive PSoC 3 creates a one-chip, customized low power and complete motor control solution
