Do Now How do you maintain the temperature in your home? Is there a system that helps control it in your house? What happens when it’s cold out? What happens when it’s warm out?

Today’s Agenda AIM: How does the respiratory system function to maintain homeostasis? How can human activities such as smoking interfere with homeostasis? Agenda: 1. Do Now 2. Unit 3: The Big Idea 3. Station Objectives and Expectations 4. Stations (36 min) 5. Class Discussion 6. Activity 4: What can take your breath away? 7. Exit Ticket 8. Extended Activity

Unit 3: Central Question How do the different organ systems of the human body work and interact with one another to maintain homeostasis? For today’s lesson, we will be looking at how the respiratory system operates to keep a stable internal environment.

Station Group Work For today’s lesson, you will be rotating around the room to 3 different stations –Station 1: From Cells to Organisms – Station 2: An introduction of Homeostasis – Station 3: The Respiratory System You will have 12 minutes in each station.

Station Expectations 1. Stay on task the entire 12 minutes 2. Use your 6 inch voices 3. Discuss and answer all station questions 4. Rotate SILENTLY to each station after the 12 minutes

Station 1: From Cells to Organisms Objective –Identify and understand the hierarchy of complexity that makes up a living organism

Station 2: Introduction to Homeostasis Objective: – Understand the phrase “maintaining homeostasis” – Explain how different organ systems in the human body work to maintain homeostasis – Determine if homeostasis is essential for human survival

Station 3: The Respiratory System Objective: – Understand the function of the respiratory system as it relates to maintaining homeostasis – Identify the structures of this system that play a vital role in sustaining an internal balance – Explain how and why the respiratory works to maintain homeostasis

Class Reunion Expectations for the listeners: Eyes on the speaker Voices off Taking notes and asking qualifying questions Expectations for the speaker: Address the entire class Speak so that everyone can hear you Use academic language/vocabulary

Check for Understanding Breathing rate is constantly being monitored and adjusted in the human body, which results in 1.the differentiation of mature body cells 2.feedback mechanisms removing damaged cells 3.modification of gene activity in cells 4.the internal environment being kept within certain limits

Activity 3: What can take your breathe away? Respiratory diseases such as asthma can interfere with maintaining an internal balance of gases. Directions: 1. Silently read the article. 2. Underline the main points, circle words you do not know and write comments/questions in the margins 3. When finished reading AND annotating, write a summary explaining the main points of the article. *** Early Bird Assignment: How does smoking affect gas exchange?

Exit Ticket

Extended Activity: Making Connections Watch the video on the respiratory system. Using both the video and the article provided, answer the following questions: 1. How does the structure of the lungs and alveoli relate to their function? 2. Explain the role of diffusion in the ability of the respiratory system to maintain homeostasis?
