Lesson Starter Match up the words with the correct meanings: 1. Habitat 2.Community 4. Ecosystem 5. Biodiversity 6. Abiotic factor 7. Biotic factor A All the animals and plants along with their habitats B Variety of organisms in an ecosystem C All the living organisms of all types in a habitat D The total number of living organisms of one type in a habitat 3. Population E The place where an organism lives F Availability of food, grazing/hunting, disease G Light, temperature, moisture
Learning Outcomes Biodiversity The factors which can limit biodiversity Importance of conservation Success Criteria I know what Biodiversity means. I can give examples of factors which limit biodiversity I know why it is important that Biodiversity if conserved
Biodiversity
The variety of organisms in an ecosystem.
Limiting Biodiversity Over hunting Pollution Effect of man (destroying habitats) Disease Competition for resources
Over hunting Limits Biodiversity
Pollution Limits Biodiversity
Effect of man Destroying habitats – Limits Biodiversity
Disease Limits Biodiversity
Competition for resources Limits Biodiversity
Revision Reminder for Darnley visit :
A quadrat is used to estimate the number of plants in an area (habitat). quadrat 0.5 m Quadrat
Measuring Abiotic Factors We can measure light using a Light meter. Make sure you don’t cast a shadow on the meter or you will get a false reading.
We can measure moisture using a moisture meter. Carefully push the probe vertically into the soil to a depth of approximately 4cm.
Line Transect Sample sites
Line Transect (going from grass (1) to trees(10)) In this example the light intensity would decrease as you move from site 1 to 10. The moisture readings would increase as you move from site 1 to 10. Therefore, the distribution of plants are different – i.e. there are likely to be more daisies at site 1 than site 10. Likewise there are likely to be more woodlice at site 10 than at site 1.
