Participatory training methods

Introduction Objective: At the end of the session the participants will be familiar with participatory training techniques and will understand their importance for use with SIYB training.

BRAINSTORMING What it is: n n Is a method to generate ideas. n n Produce list of possible solutions / answers n n Then discuss (de)merits When to use: n n Find solutions to a problem

BRAINSTORMING Advantage: n n High degree of participation n n Creative thinking How to use: n n Max. idea generation, no comments n n Ask individuals

DISCUSSION What it is: n n Exchange of ideas, opinions, knowledge n n Free exchange n n Open discussion: led by facilitator n n Group discussion: small groups, followed by presentation

DISCUSSION When to use: n n Analyze a situation n n Reinforce concepts n n Participants should have knowledge about subject n n Result: change in attitudes

DISCUSSION Advantage: n n Feedback to trainer on applying knowledge Disadvantage: n n Lack of discussion Points to watch: n n -Stubbornness n n -Control discussion

EXERCISE What it is: n n Conduct a particular task n n Testing or applying knowledge When to use: n n After learning (piece of a) topic Result: Active learning (by doing) Feedback to trainer Points to watch: support struggling participants

CASE STUDY What it is: n n Case (historic / fictitious) to be analyzed and / or solved When to use: n n Demonstrate / practice real life problem Result: n n Prepares trainees for similar real life situations

CASE STUDY Advantages: n n Practice problem without real-life pressure n n Discuss alternative solutions Disadvantage: n n Case is different (simplification) of real life Points to watch: n n Point out that case is not real life

ROLE PLAY What it is: n n Dramatization of real life based on roles n n Practice real life situations; then discuss Result: n n Learn from practice near-to-life situations Advantages: n n Create confidence

ROLE PLAY Disadvantage: n n Different from real life Points to watch: n n Possible embarrassment, loss of confidence n n Non-serious approach / carried away n n Moderation facilitator required
