© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Introduction Alma comes “Out of the box” with standard MARC 21 profiles for bibliographic, authority and holdings records These profiles are in accordance with the official MARC 21 standards. In some cases, however, a library may wish to adjust the MARC 21 profiles. This may be due to, for example A.The sharing of records with another organization which catalogs records in a manner which differs from the standard MARC 21 rules B.Local regional uses of MARC which differ from the standard MARC 21 rules 4

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Introduction In order to change the “Out of the box” MARC 21 profile it is possible to 1.Manually change the field(s) one by one 2.Add an extension pack and globally change one or many fields via an input file This presentation will deal with the use of the extension pack 5 Option 1 Option 2

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary 6 Introduction Two examples where customization is needed Adding a field with an extension pack Future developments

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Example 1 Alma by default does checks on the bibliographic LDR pos. 17 according to the 10 standard MARC values as described at blank u vhttp:// 7

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Example 1 The OCLC organization uses additional values: I K L M J as described at 8

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Example 1 When using the standard Alma MARC 21 profile and saving a record imported from OCLC which has one of the unique OCLC values the following alert will be received 9 Certain institutions may wish to define the additional OCLC values as part of their local MARC 21 bibliographic profile.

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Example 2 A region of libraries might use the bibliographic 689 as the “Angaben nach RSWK” (“Information according RSWK”) According to the “6XX - Subject Access Fields-General Information” page at there is no standard 689 field 10

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Example 2 When using the standard Alma MARC 21 profile and saving a record which has a 689 field the following alert will be received, unless the 689 gets added to the MARC 21 bibliographic profile 11

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary 12 Introduction Two examples where customization is needed Adding a field with an extension pack Future developments

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Adding a field with an extension pack Step 1 is to take sample extension pack file from one of the following two locations: 1. RC21%20extensions%20Germany.xmlhttps://developers.exlibrisgroup.com/resources/MA RC21%20extensions%20Germany.xml 2. Documentation/Alma_Online_Help_(English)/Resou rce_Management/080Configuring_Resource_Manag ement/Configuring_Cataloging#Extension_Pack_.xm l_File_Examplehttp://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Product_ Documentation/Alma_Online_Help_(English)/Resou rce_Management/080Configuring_Resource_Manag ement/Configuring_Cataloging#Extension_Pack_.xm l_File_Example 13

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Adding an extension pack Step 2 is to edit the file to accommodate the desired changes to the MARC 21 profile. An example of an existing field in the file can be used. For 689 field the section will start as follows (see full example in accompanying file): 14

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Adding an extension pack For 689 field the section for indicators will be defined in the following format: 15 To allow for a blank indicator use a #

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Adding an extension pack For 689 field the section for subfields will be defined in the following format: 16

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Adding an extension pack Step 3 is to add the file as an extension pack to the bibliographic profile 17

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Adding an extension pack The extension is successfully loaded 18 Click “Deploy” after the file is loaded

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Adding an extension pack The 689 field has been added to the profile with definitions from the extension pack xml file 19

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Adding an extension pack And now there is no error message for the 689 field because it is a “legal” part of the bibliographic profile 20

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Adding an extension pack Note: In the case of a consortial setup depending on configuration the extension pack may be needed to be added in the network institution to influence the consortial member institutions. 21

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary 22 Introduction Two examples where customization is needed Adding a field with an extension pack Future developments

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Future developments It will be possible to download the extension pack file from the bibliographic profile for purposes of editing and reloading (internal: 2017 Q1 URM-45100) 23 New option to download file will be added here, will be part of sharing option

© 2016 Ex Libris | Confidential & Proprietary Future developments It will be possible to share the extension pack file with the community as well as copy a file from the community (internal: 2017 Q1 URM-45100) 24 New option to share file will be added here
