OVERVIEW Team Distribution Problem Solution Constraints  Technical  Practical System Overview PCB Development Prototype Encasing Mobile Application Improvements Bill of Materials Final Timeline Q&A [2]

PROBLEM The issue with alarm companies of today is that they overcharge for the service they are offering. In the United States nearly 2 million households are broken into each year [4]. In the United States, only 17% of homes have a home security system [4]. [3]

SOLUTION The Home Alarm System is going to change the face of the market by offering an easy, self-install alarm system that offers the same great protection as other companies without the overpriced rates. The Home Alarm System is not a service, but a product. It is up to the user to keep track of and monitor their own alarm system.

TECHNICAL CONSTRAINTS Communication Systems The mobile must be able to communicate with at least 4 nodes. Node BatteriesThe battery in each node must provide enough voltage to operate the sensor/switch, microcontroller, and transceiver. Mobile ApplicationThe Android smartphone application must be able to arm, disarm, control individual nodes, and provide battery life information for each node. Server FunctionThe user must receive a notification within 10 seconds of the alarm being tripped. Node FunctionEach node must be able to communicate with the microprocessor at a distance of 40 feet inside a home.

PRACTICAL CONSTRAINTS EconomicHome Alarm system’s installation and monthly costs for this package must be less than what the competitors offer. SustainabilityTo function properly and receive notifications, the home must have electricity and a wireless network.

ECONOMIC ADT and other big alarm companies offer similar packages for $36.99 a month with a +$99 installation fee [1] The Home Alarm System has NO monthly payments

SUSTAINABILITY Home owner must provide: Accessible Wi-Fi Wall outlet for microprocessor power

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

COMPLETED IMPROVEMENTS

IMPROVEMENTS: SWITCH NODE PCB DEVELOPMENT Take Arduino Pro Mini and Transceiver and place component on PCB, instead of re- inventing component

IMPROVEMENTS: SWITCH NODE PCB

IMPROVEMENTS: MOTION NODE PCB DEVELOPMENT Motion sensor followed same premise as the magnetic switch, i.e. placing parts on PCB instead of individual components

IMPROVEMENTS: MOTION NODE PCB

COMPLETED PCB: SWITCH NODE Arduino mini, nRF Nordic transceiver all on compact PCB.

COMPLETED PCB: MOTION NODE PIR Sensor connected to Arduino Mini, NRF Nordic transceiver to communicate with Raspberry Pi.

IMPROVEMENTS: RASPBERRY PI ENCLOSURE Full enclosure of Raspberry Pi to protect it from outside contamination

IMPROVEMENTS: GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS Removable lid added to allow for ease of opening and closing

IMPROVEMENTS: MOTION NODE ENCLOSURE Encase motion node with total enclosure that looks somewhat appealing as well as protects vital components from dust

COMPLETED IMPROVEMENT: MOTION NODE HARDWARE ENCLOSURE

COMPLETED IMPROVEMENTS: SWITCH NODE HARDWARE ENCLOSURE

HARDWARE SETUP Hardware functions the same as before, just with updated enclosures.

COMPLETED IMPROVEMENTS: MOBILE APPLICATION Mobile application response time updated to further improve how quickly the system reacts to an intrusion in the home

COMPLETED: BATTERY LIFE IMPROVEMENTS The figures show the current draw for the entire switch node when it is open and closed By putting the nodes in a sleep mode, we were able to improve the battery life significantly. The new battery life of the nodes is now at 510 days before replacement. These measurements falls within the design constraints of providing enough power to operate the node

COMPLETED: TESTING THE PACKAGED NRF24L01 NORDIC TRANSCEIVER

COMPLETED: TESTING THE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM System Disarmed

COMPLETED: TESTING THE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM System Armed

COMPLETED: TESTING THE ALARM NOTIFICATION SYSTEM

FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS/PROVISIONS Expand the Home Alarm System to include monitoring of other common household alarms, such as smoke or carbon monoxide. Integrate Home Alarm System into iOS and become available on all Apple iPhones.

FINAL TIMELINE

BILL OF MATERIALS Arduino Mini: $9.95 = $39.80 NRF24L01: $1.99 = $9.90 Raspberry Pi: $34.99 = $34.99 Switch Node: $2.95 = $5.90 Motion Node: $9.95 = $19.90 PCB: $20.67 = $62.00
