Spanish Influence and Mexican Texas

Spain wanted to settle Texas, but our state’s geography discouraged the Spanish people from wanting to settle here. The Mexican government had some success with getting people from the United States. So Spain tried to attract people to Texas from the US also. They offered cheap land to any families willing to move to Texas. That was the cause of many Anglo-Americans coming to Texas. Who received one of the first land grants in Texas? Moses Austin GTT!

Stephen F. Austin fulfilled his father’s plan and brought the first 300 families to Texas. Austin’s colony proved to be one of the most successful colonies in Texas also. *What were they known as? Texas was under Spanish rule, but they allowed American settlers to colonize the area. Why? No people from their own country were willing to settle the area.

Settling Texas Most settlements in Texas were between which two rivers? Why do you think they settled near rivers? Plenty of water for survival and crops. Good access to Old San Antonio Road and the Gulf of Mexico so the settlers could travel back into the US and the empresarios could travel to Mexico City easily.

5 SPANISH LEFT LASTING LEGACY What is a legacy? Spanish culture is still very present in Texas Spanish influence seen in language and names—such as: names, towns, and rivers Food Architecture-the historic architecture of the Spanish missions attracts thousands of visitors to missions in Texas each year What are some more things you can think of?

That is why The Constitution of 1824 focused on state self-government. The writers wanted more power was given to citizens rather than the government. An important person in the writing of the Constitution was Erasmo Seguín. Texans resented the growing strength of the Mexican government. Many settlers from the United States liked the idea of self-government that was prevalent in America. Mexican Texas

Texas became Coahuila y Tejas -- one of the states in the United Mexican States under its 1824 Constitution. Slavery was something specifically banned in the Constitution of Coahuila y Texas. The Texans rebelled against the increasingly oppressive Mexican government. Mexico confronted Texans that were pushing for independence.
