Developmental Kindergarten Orientation Welcome, Parents!

What is Developmental Kindergarten? Developmental Kindergarten is designed to provide opportunities for growth in the following basic areas of development:  Emotional: Encourages independence, builds confidence and self- esteem, and supports a positive self-image.  Social: Encourages students to learn to communicate with others and build positive, respectful relationships.  Physical: Encourages participation in active hands-on sensory learning and strengthens both fine and gross motor skills.  Academic: Encourages a love for learning and prepares students for success in Kindergarten and beyond.

Randels Developmental Kindergarten?  Taught by a highly qualified and experienced teacher  Smaller class size  Assistant teacher  Developmentally appropriate instruction through hands-on learning and play  Cooperation with kindergarten staff to provide a seamless transition to Kindergarten next year

Daily Activities  Fine Motor Activities  cutting, coloring, writing  Music and Movement  Literacy Activities  Shared reading, read aloud, letter practice, phonics, nursery rhymes, small group instruction  Math Activities  Calendar, hands-on manipulatives, math stations, number practice, math games  Learning Centers  GrapeSeed  Oral language program that helps develop vocabulary and literacy skills

Additional Activities  30 Minute Computer Lab (4 times a week)  Media Center Lessons  60 Minute Supervised Lunch and Recess  52 Minute -Special Class (AMPS)  Art  Music  Physical Education & Health  Students must wear tennis shoes  Science

Developmental Kindergarten Expectations Language Arts  Understand text read aloud  Retell familiar stories in sequence  Identify uppercase and lowercase letters  Know letter sounds  Recognize and produce rhyming words  Read print with one to one matching  Begin to read common high frequency words  Use simple reading strategies

Developmental Kindergarten Expectations Writing  Use recognizable drawings to represent a story  Dictate a story on topic  Begin to use letters and words to write a story  Print uppercase and lowercase letters  Write first and last name Speaking and Listening  Participate in classroom conversations  Ask and answer questions  Speak audibly and clearly express thoughts

Developmental Kindergarten Expectations Mathematics  Count to 20 or above  Recognize numbers 0-20  Write numbers 0-20  Compare groups (greater than, less than, equal)  Recognize, extend, and create patterns  Sort objects by color, shape, and size  Compare objects by length (shorter, taller, longer)  Correctly identify shapes  Begin to understand addition and subtraction

What does my child need to bring to school?  A backpack LARGE enough to hold folders  Weather appropriate clothing  All personal belonging should be labeled and should fit in your backpack  A set of labeled clothes in a labeled bag for emergencies (Please keep in backpack)
