Grade and Slope Control (c) Control System – Equipped with a paver control system which:  Controls the HMAC placement to specified slope and grade  Maintains the paver screed in proper position  Provides the specified results through mechanical sensors and sensor-directed devices actuated from independent line and grade control references Control of Line and Grade – Use a floating beam device of adequate length and sensitivity to control the grade of the paver. Where this method is impractical, manual control of grade will be permitted when approved.

When the grade sensor is mounted rearward in line with the augers, it causes the screed to react very quickly to any detected deviation at the sensor. In this position if a 1/4" deviation is detected at the sensor, 1" of tow point movement will occur. This is a very good position for joint matching or following a fixed stringline as the screed will react very quickly.

When the grade sensor is mounted forward close to the tow point cylinder, the screed reacts slowly. The change in mat thickness is spread out over a distance equal to five tow arm lengths. In this position if a 1/4" deviation is detected at the sensor, 1/4" of tow point movement will occur. The screed will gradually change depth and smoothness is accomplished. This is a very good position when used with an averaging ski as the screed will react gradually.

Mat Problems

Correction of Defects (b) Boils, Slicks, and Oversized Material – Immediately replace boils, slicks, and oversized materials with fresh mixture (c) Segregation – Take immediate corrective measures when segregation or non-uniform surface texture is occurring in the finished mat. If segregation continues to occur, stop production until a plan for providing uniform surface texture is approved by the Engineer (g) Other Defects – Remove and replace any HMAC that:  Is loose, broken, or mixed with dirt  Shows visually too much or too little asphalt  Is defective in any way
