Who Should be King? LO: to explain claims to the English throne

Election Campaign Imagine there is going to be an election to decide which of the claimants will become the next king of England. You will work in four groups of eight/nine. In your groups you must produce a campaign to support your candidate and persuade others in your class to vote for him.

Your Task Your group must produce the following items before the election next lesson: An A3 poster supporting your candidate (2). Three A5 leaflet explaining why your candidate should be king of England (3). Two A5 information fliers that can be handed to people giving short facts about your candidate (2). A speech that will be performed by one member of your own group in front of the class next week (2).

Election Day! Each group will send 3 delegates to each campaign to gather information on that candidate. 2 people from each group should man their campaign area to answer questions on their candidate. As a group, come back together and share your information. Each group will then give their speeches. At the end of the speeches, you will need to vote in secret for who should be king.

Explain who you think should have been King of England after Edward the Confessor's death. You need to explain who you think should be king of England. You can use this frame to help you. Introduction – Explain who Edward the Confessor was and when he died. Explain what the qualities of a good English king are. Explain who the contenders for the throne are. Section 1 – Explain Harald Hardraada’s claim to the throne. Section 2 – Explain William of Normandy’s claim to the throne. Section 3 – Explain Harold Godwinson’s claim to the throne. Section 4 - Explain Edgar Atheling's claim to the throne. Conclusion – Explain which of the contenders you think should be king and give your reasons why.

It will explain in detail what the Witan thought made for a good King and will compare this with the strengths and weaknesses of each contender. You will include key historical detail and use key terminology.
