Body Planes and Cavities
Objectives Label a diagram of the three planes of the body with the names of the planes and the directional terms created by these planes Label a diagram of the main body cavities
Body Planes: Definition = imaginary lines drawn through the body to separate the body into sections
Transverse Plane: Horizontal plane dividing the body into a top and bottom half – **superior/inferior
Sagittal Plane: Divides the body into right and left sides.
Midsagittal Plane: Divides the body into EQUAL right and left sides (Down the MIDline)
Frontal (Coronal) Plane: Divides the body into front and back section. **Anterior / Posterior
Let’s see if you can name them, provided examples! …. GRAB A WHITE BOARD!
Body Cavities: Spaces within the body which contain vital organs We will color-code as we go along…. Make sure to grab the following colors: Red Pink Yellow Black Blue Orange
Dorsal Cavity (8): One long continuous cavity that is located on the back of the body, divided into two sections 6. Cranial Cavity (Blue) = contains the brain 7. Spinal Cavity (Orange) = contains the spinal cord
Ventral (1) Cavities: Larger and separated into two distinct cavities by a dome-shaped muscle called the diaphragm (3 – black), which is important for breathing 2. Thoracic Cavity (yellow) = located in the chest, contains the heart, lungs, and the large blood vessels
4. Abdominopelvic Cavity (pink) = divided into upper and lower parts Upper part contains the stomach, small intestines, most of the large intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas and spleen
-Abdominopelvic cavity includes Pelvic Cavity (5 – red) lower abdominal cavity containing urinary bladder, the reproductive organs, and last part of the large intestines
Frontal View Within the thoracic cavity, there are TWO pleural cavities, each containing the lungs. 1 – Left pleural cavity (yellow) 3 – Right pleural cavity (yellow)
The Heart is located in a cavity called the pericardial cavity (2 - red) Cardi(o) =heart This sits superior to the “breathing muscle” the diaphragm (4 – Black) Again, the Abdominopelvic cavity (5 – pink) is found inferior to the diaphragm
Activity - You will write 8 sentences by filling in the following statement. “If I were the _____ cavity, I would say, “______.” When your cavity “talks” it must be about what organs it houses, its purpose, or its function
