The Washwoman Statement Agree Disagree The type of work a person does reveals his or her character. Working hard is its own reward. People contribute less to society as they age? A person can become wealthy if he or she works hard.

Vocabulary Look over the vocabulary on page 24 in the literature book before reading. Vocabulary tip: The prefix fore- means “earlier” or “in front of.” In this story, the washwoman comes from generations of “peasant forebears,” or ancestors who lived long before her.

Use the think aloud reading strategy. How it works Verbalize your thinking as you read. What do I know about this topic? What do I think I will learn about this topic? Do I understand what I just read? Do I have a clear picture in my head about this information? What more can I do to understand this? What were the most important points in this reading? What new information did I learn? How does it fit in with what I already know?

Rules for Working in Groups Move to your group quickly and quietly. Full group participation is required. Everyone in the group must cooperate to complete the task. Groups must stay on task. Groups assigned by the teacher are non- negotiable. Points will deducted for being uncooperative if you must be moved to a new group. Keep track of appointed time for assignments.

Chunk the text. Chunk 1: hour and a half. Chunk 2: she did a wash! Chunk 3: to the altar. Chunk 4: philosophic works. Chunk 5: garments as well. Chunk 6: us so faithfully. Chunk 7: pale lips. Chunk 8: new load of wash. Chunk 9: such effort.
