POL 101: Responsible Citizenship Benedictine Values and Global Stewardship

I.Benedictine values at the University of Mary II.Global Stewardship III.Service Learning IV.Putting it all together…

Benedictine values Benedictine values at the University of Mary: 1.Community 2.Hospitality 3.Respect for Persons 4.Prayer 5.Service 6.Moderation

Benedictine values “One of the core Benedictine values is "community." U-Mary is a community of learners that recognizes and respects diversity and the richness it brings to the college experience.” “Each student is encouraged to participate in his or her religious, social, educational, and political communities and share his or her traditions as part of the U-Mary community. “ ( Source: University of Mary webpage)

Benedictine values Community “We put time and effort into caring for and supporting one another and in being positive, contributing members of our community. We promote community activities that foster growth and development. We strive to be generous in sharing our gifts with one another and in pursuit of community goals. We commit ourselves to stewardship of the community's facilities, resources, and reputation. We agree to respect and honor the policies and expectations of the community.” (Source: University of Mary webpage)

Benedictine values Service “We are committed to being of service to others and to our community. We believe that service to others benefits those who serve as well as those served. With Jesus Christ as our example and witness, we strive to build up the community as servant-leaders.” (Source: University of Mary webpage)

Benedictine values Course stresses Community and Service. All values are incorporated through interactions during the course. Acting within these values should help students reach goals and develop ethical work values. The final paper allows development of values through service learning.

Global Stewardship Demonstrate social skills to function effectively in diverse groups. Develop self-awareness, personal wellness, and open-mindedness. Analyze the impact of contemporary, historical, and cultural perspectives. Devise strategies for social and scientific responsibility through community engagement, citizenship, and advocacy. (Threads of Learning, nd)

Global Stewardship Social connections important; part of bridging social capital (Putnam 2000). What is being globally aware? Does watching the news alone count? Is the present generation more or less aware of responsibilities to a larger community? Service learning serves as a connection of materials to stewardship

Putting it all together… Service should help citizens learn about democracy directly through process. Benedictine values, especially Community and Service, central to civic culture. Global Stewardship means having a deeper understanding of impact on those around us.
