Topic 12 continued: Tectonic Plates There are three (3) types of plate boundaries: 1) divergent plate boundary – where two plates separate or diverge.

Which plate boundary is represented?. Convergent Boundary.
Hess reasoned that if the ocean floor was moving away from either side of the mid- ocean ridge. Then it must be colliding somewhere else, such as the.
Types of Plate Boundaries After completing this section, students will identify that the Earth is made of geologic plates (Standard PI-041) and investigate.
The Theory of Plate Tectonics The Earth’s crust is broken up into plates which move around on top of the mantle **Driven by convection currents**

Presentation transcript:

Crustal Features and plate boundaries

Trench Definition: A deep depression of the sea floor caused by subduction of one plate under another. Boundary Type: Convergent

Rift zones Definition: An area in the middle of a continental plate where the plate is beginning to separate. A large valley will form in the area as the crust thins. Boundary Type: Divergent

Oceanic ridges Definition: Underwater mountain ranges where the crust is spreading apart creating new ocean floor. Boundary Type: Divergent

Underwater mountain ranges Definition: Long, continuous volcanic chain of various mountains. Boundary Type: Divergent

Mountain ranges on land Definition: A series of mountains that are close together and rise 300 m (1000 ft.) above its surrounding area. Boundary Type: Convergent

Ring of fire Definition: An area that is surrounding the Pacific Ocean that is comprised of multiple chains of volcanic islands. The area also has an abundance of volcanic activity. Boundary Type: Convergent

fault Definition: A crack in the Earth’s crust where rocks slide past one another. Different types of faults form based on direction of plate movement. Boundary Type: Divergent, Convergent, Transform
