Goals of Dual Language Program To develop high level of proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening in two languages. To develop high academic performance in all content areas. To develop a deep understanding and appreciation of other cultures. To develop skills in cross cultural communication and a sense of responsible global citizenship.

What will the schedule looks like?

How do I get my child enrolled? Attend one of the parent information meetings scheduled in the Spring Sign a parent commitment letter * Students who are not living in the attendance zone of one of the two-way dual language schools must attend Winston Elementary or ET Wrenn Middle School. A transfer request must be completed. The district does not provide transportation. If space is available siblings of DL students may also attend Winston. *Students who are in 5 th grade and have never been in a dual language program must take a Spanish Language Proficiency Test. Parents will be notified of program acceptance on or before the last day of school

TACKLING HOMEWORK

Homework Tips When your child does homework, you do “homework,” such as balancing a checkbook. When your child asks for help, provide guidance, not answers. When the teacher asks that you play a role in homework, do it. Homework is meant to be done by your child alone, stay away.

Homework Tips Cont’d Stay informed about your child’s school assignments. Help your child figure out what is hard homework and what is easy homework. Watch your child for signs of failure or frustration. Reward progress in homework.

READING HOMEWORK

Homework Tips on Reading: Have your child read aloud to you every night. Choose a quiet place, free from distractions, for your child to do his nightly reading assignments. As your child reads, point out spelling and sound patterns such as cat, pat, hat.

Homework Tips on Reading: When your child reads aloud to you and makes a mistake, point out words she has missed and help her to read the word correctly. After your child has stopped to correct a word he has read, have him go back and reread the entire sentence from the beginning to make sure he understands what the sentence is saying.

Homework Tips on Reading: Ask your child to tell you in her own words what happened in a story. To check your child’s understanding of what he is reading, occasionally pause and ask your child questions about the characters and events in the story.

Homework Tips on Reading: Ask your child why she thinks a character acted in a certain way and ask your child to support her answer with information from the story. Before getting to the end of a story, ask your child what he thinks will happen next and why.

MATH HOMEWORK

Homework Tips on Math: Encourage your child to use a daily math assignment book. Check with your child daily about his homework. Try to be aware of how your child is being taught math, and don’t teach strategies and shortcuts that conflict with the approach the teacher is using.

Homework Tips on Math: Ask the teacher about online resources that you can use with your child at home. Use household chores and shopping trips as opportunities for reinforcing math learning. Ex: grocery shopping, cooking, and repair activities.
