Presentation transcript:

What Is BULLYING? Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Verbal Bullying - yelling, making fun of someone, name calling Social Bullying – sending mean messages, posting embarrassing photos on social media/texts, agreeing with a mean post about someone Physical Bullying - hitting, pushing, shoving, tripping, fighting

What Is bullying And What Is unkind behavior.? Any of the following aggressive behaviors are not bullying if the actions occur once (i.e., no pattern) or done with no intention of gaining power. Verbal behaviors - A statement of dislike toward or about someone, a single act of telling a joke about someone, arguments or heated disagreements between two or more people/groups (the pattern of which is not repeated to gain power), expressions of unpleasant thoughts or feelings regarding others Non-verbal behaviors - Being excluded, not playing with someone, choosing different people or groups to play with from time to time Physical behaviors - accidently bumping into someone, making others play things a certain way (natural behavior— everyone likes things done their way), any of the behaviors listed to the left (pushing, shoving, tripping, hitting, etc.) which occurs ONCE (i.e., is not a repeated or pattern of behavior)

How To stop Bullying On The Spot! As a student: Tell an adult immediately. Your teacher cares about you and wants to help you. Separate from the person or group Make sure you are safe Get police help or medical attention immediately if: A weapon is involved. There are threats of serious physical injury. There are threats of hate-motivated violence Don’t ignore it. Don’t think you can work it out without adult help

How To stop Bullying On The Spot! As a parent: Talk to your child's teacher about it instead of confronting the bully's parents.... Teach your child nonviolent ways to deal with bullies, like walking away, playing with friends, or talking it out. Help your child act with self-confidence.... Don't encourage your child to fight. Clearly define what is bullying and what is unkind behavior
