What is bullying? Physical abuse – hitting, tripping, pushing etc Verbal abuse – name calling, taunting, abuse Emotional/psychological abuse – leaving people out of things, ignoring them, making them feel uncomfortable Electronic abuse – texts, s, messages Taking things/money Threatening behaviour and making threats/intimidating behaviour Making people do things they don’t want to do

What could be the effects of bullying? Physical Harm Fear, worry, isolation Depression, low self-esteem Not attending College and failing course Mental health problems Self harm Suicide
Why do people bully? They think it makes them popular They think it makes them look big To impress others To get attention To make other people afraid They are jealous They are insecure/inadequate and have low self-esteem
Why are people bullied? They are different - because of their Colour/race Dress Appearance Size Name Interests – music type, hobbies etc Where they live They look like they won’t stand up for themselves (like victims)
What should you do if you are bullied? Remember it’s the bully who is the problem not you Make sure you stay in a group with friends Ignore the bully, tell them stop and walk away Report it to your personal tutor or Student Services
What should you do if someone else is bullied? Try to stop it Help them to report it
Have you ever been or are you a bully? Some questions to ask yourself Why did you or do you do it? How did you/do you feel at the time? Can you stop it? REMEMBER - IF YOU BULLY YOU WILL BE DISCIPLINED!
