“Expect Respect” Stop, Walk, Talk

#1.) Establish rules for instruction based on positively stated school- wide and classroom expectations -Focus on the task at hand -Learn and follow all school and classroom expectations. -Maintain interest and respect during the presentation and discussion. -Show Respect when others are speaking, even if you do not agree with their opinion.

#2.) What does safe, respectful, and responsible behavior look like when students interact with each other? Examples: -Being kind and friendly to everyone -Help those who need help -Converse calmly and positively -Compliment someone -Saying excuse me if someone is in the way or you need their attention -Sit next to someone who is sitting by themselves

#3.) Discussion: What are examples of behaviors and conversations that are not safe, respectful, or responsible? Examples: -Calling someone names -Joking at someone else’s expense -Unwanted staring -Talking behind someone’s back -Threatening another person -Hitting, kicking, tripping, pushing, or unwanted touching of others -Using phones or social media to threaten or make fun of others

#4.) Discussion: (Bystanders) What problems may occur when students who observe bullying encourage or ignore the behavior? Examples: -The spread of bullying -Feeling guilty or ashamed for not doing what you know is right -Lack of focus on learning -Students missing school

Turn A Life Around

What you can do: Problem behaviors need peer attention to keep going Discuss the many forms of peer attention: Arguing with someone that teases you Laughing at someone being picked on Watching problem behavior and doing nothing about it. Liking a mean post of facebook Take away the peer attention that keeps problem behavior going by: Telling someone teasing you to “stop” Walking away from problem behavior Helping another student by saying “stop” or by walking away from problem behavior with them. Tell an adult

Bullies and Bystanders: What Teens Say Bullying knocks down thousands of kids every day, but when one person stands, another will stand with them. You can be that person, you can turn a life around. Remember, the end of bullying begins with you.

#5.) Social Responsibility Skills 1.Stop- Tell students that are using unsafe, disrespectful, or irresponsible behavior to stop the behavior. 2.Walk- Respectfully walk away from the problem. 3.Talk- If the behavior continues, talk to an adult.

STOP Examples of When to Use “Stop” -Someone is cruelly teasing you or someone else. -You or others are being bullied in any way -You or someone you know are being threatened physically or verbally -Someone is touching you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable. -Others?

Walk Away Sometimes, even when you tell others to “stop”, problem behavior will continue. When this happens, you should "walk away" from the problem behavior. Walking away removes the reinforcement for problem behavior

Talk ( Report Problems to an Adult) Sometimes when you use “stop” and you “walk away” from the problem, other students may continue to behave inappropriately toward you. When that happens, you should "talk" to an adult

Talking vs. “Telling” Talking is when you have tried to solve the problem yourself, and have used the “Stop" and “Walk" steps first. “Telling” is when your goal is to get the other person in trouble, not to solve the problem.

The Next Step… The next step is to fill out a harassment form. The forms are available from Mrs. Stevens at the attendance office. You should fill out a harassment form when: 1. You have used the Stop, Walk, Talk procedure and the problem continues to occur. 2. You believe you are in physical danger. 3. The verbal bulling is so serious that it needs to be brought to the attention of the office staff right away.
