Back to School Night 2 nd Grade Mrs. Rea

Classroom Procedures  Communication  Travel Folders  Lunch and Snack  Homework  Behavior  Book Orders  Birthday Parties

Communication  is preferred. My is:  I can be reached by phone at:  You can send me a note in your child’s travel folder  Changes in dismissal must be sent in writing  Please check my homework board each day by visiting

Travel Folders  Please check your child’s travel folder each day  Please clean out your child’s travel folder each day  Make sure travel folders are returned to school each day  Send notes, lunch money, and forms in your child’s travel folder

Lunch and Snack  If your child buys lunch you can purchase it online, or you can send money in an envelope labeled with your child’s first and last name, grade, and teacher  If your child packs lunch, please pack it separately from their snack. Each bag should be labeled with their first and last name  Please send a healthy snack to school with your child each day. A list of approved healthy snacks can be found on the school website

Homework  Math homework will be given Monday – Thursday  Other homework will be sent home on Monday in the Friday Folder and will be due on Friday  Friday folder will contain reading logs, fluency homework, and word study tic-tac-toe  Check your child’s planner or the homework board each day  Homework reinforces skills learned in class

Fluency Homework  Your child will bring home one sheet of fluency practice each week  Each day your child will read the story and answer the day’s question  You will time your child reading the story aloud for 1 minute. Record the total words read and subtract the errors to find words correct per minute  Read the parent tips each week for more ways to support your student

Word Study Homework AppetizerMain CourseDessert Sort your word cards and write each word in the correct columns on your mat Read a book at home and hunt for at least 5 words that have the patterns you are working on, then write them in the correct columns on your mat Choose 5 of your words and write two words for each that have the same pattern but are not on your list Choose ten of your words, write them neatly, and color the vowels in each word Sort your word cards and put each column in abc order then write the words in each columns in abc order Choose 4 of your words and write each word in a juicy sentence – don’t forget to underline your words Choose one of the patterns you are working on and write a sentence explaining how the pattern works then write 3 more words that have that same pattern Choose 4 of your words and write the definition for each word then add an illustration to match each word Create an open sort by thinking of something a group of your words have in common then write those words in a list and write your rule

Behavior  Positive reinforcement is used to encourage good choices  Students earn play nickels when they make good choices which can be used for prizes  If a student does not make a good choice they confer privately with the teacher. Student progress is tracked on a weekly behavior log which is sent home each Friday

Scholastic Book Orders  Book orders are optional, but offer grade level appropriate books at reasonable prices  Book orders earn us points to get books for our class library  Book orders will be sent home the first Monday of each month and will be due that Friday  Send in completed order forms along with the payment in an envelope labeled with your child’s name (checks are preferred)  If you wish to order online, our class code is: HJ4JK

Birthday Parties  Sending food is not necessary, but if you wish to send a snack, it must be something from the approved healthy snack list  You do not have to send goody bags, but if you would like to, they must be filled with educational items  We have 20 students in our class, 9 girls and 11 boys

Schedule  We have double periods of Reading and Writing Workshop and Math  We will teach Social Studies and Science in units  Other subjects we have are: Word Study, Family Life, Handwriting, and Spanish

Special Subjects  Monday – Media – return book  Tuesday – Music  Wednesday – Gym – wear sneakers  Thursday – Art  Friday – Gym – wear sneakers

Reading Workshop  Children learn strategies that enable them to become better readers  Children learn skills that help them comprehend what they read  Children listen to books from a variety of genres  Children have independent reading time each day when they will read a book at their level

Writing Workshop  Children learn skills and strategies to help them become better writers  Children write about topics they are passionate about  Children learn about various genres of writing  Children learn to stretch out their writing  Children learn about the publishing process

Math  We use a program called Go Math  Go Math is aligned with the NJCCCS  Children learn new skills in a variety of ways such as using manipulatives, playing games, and working in math centers  Children work in small groups to review skills depending on their academic needs

Social Studies and Science  In Social Studies students learn about the following concepts: communities, holidays, U.S. government, and U.S. history  In Science students learn about the following concepts: plants and animals, forces and motion, and physical and chemical changes  Students participate in hands-on science experiments

Word Study  Word Study takes the place of a traditional spelling program  Instead of memorizing words, students learn spelling patterns that they can apply when they read and write

Family Life  Students learn about conflict resolution. They learn how to use “I Messages” and the Work-it-Out Area  Students learn the importance of respect and responsibility  Students learn about healthy choices  Students learn about the role of families and how families are alike and different

Handwriting and Spanish  In handwriting students practice proper posture and pencil grip and learn to form their letters properly to enable them to always use their best handwriting  In Spanish students learn vocabulary to help them start to communicate and understand the language. Some topics include: numbers, colors, animals, and weather

Closing  My job is to make sure your child is reaching their potential  I do this by:  Creating meaningful and engaging lessons  Differentiating my instruction  Fostering your child’s social, emotional, and academic needs
