Aims for the evening To understand what your child needs to learn by the end of KS2 To understand a typical maths session in Year 5 To have some ideas about how to support your child at home
Upper Key Stage Two - Summary Teachers must ensure pupils extend their understanding of the number system and place value to include larger integers Pupils should make links between multiplication and division with fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio. Pupils should develop their ability to solve a wider range of problems, including increasingly complex properties of numbers and arithmetic. Furthermore, problems involving efficient written and mental methods of calculation. Pupils should also be extended to consider arithmetic. Teaching in geometry and measures should consolidate, apply and extend number knowledge. Teaching should also ensure that pupils classify shapes with increasingly complex geometric properties and learn the vocabulary needed to describe them. By the end of year 6, pupils should be fluent in written methods for all four operations, including long multiplication and division, and in working with fractions, decimals and percentages. Pupils should read, spell and pronounce mathematical accurately.
4 Magnitude of Calculations Year 3 – add numbers with up to three-digits, HTU + multiples of 10, HTU + multiples of 100, subtract numbers up to three-digits, HTU – U, HTU – multiples of 10, HTU – multiples of 100, HTU – HTU, TU x U, TU ÷ U Year 4 - add and subtract numbers with up to four-digits, ThHTU + ThHTU, ThHTU - ThHTU, add and subtract decimals with up to two decimal places in the context of money, multiply three numbers together, TU x U, HTU x U, TU x U, multiply by zero and one, TU ÷ U, HTU ÷ U Year 5 – add and subtract numbers with more than four-digits, add and subtract decimals with up to three decimal places, ThHTU x U, ThHTU x TU, HTU x TU, multiply whole numbers and decimals with up to three- decimal places by 10, 100 and 1000, divide numbers with up to four-digits by U (including remainders as fractions and decimals and rounding according to the context) Year 6 - add and subtract numbers with more than four-digits, add and subtract decimals with up to three decimal places, multiply numbers with up to four-digits by TU, multiply numbers with up to two- decimal places by a whole number, divide numbers up to four-digits by TU (interpreting remainder according to the context), divide decimals up to two-decimal places by U or TU
Targets in Year 5 Number & Place Value Read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1,000,000 and determine the value of each digit. Include read, write, order and compare numbers with up to 3 decimal places. Count backwards or forwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to 1,000,000. Interpret negative numbers in context, count forwards and backwards with positive and negative whole numbers, including through 0. Round any number up to 1,000,000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, and 100,000. Include rounding decimals with two decimal places, to the nearest whole number and to 1 decimal place. Mentally add and subtract tenths and one digit whole numbers and tenths. Practise adding and subtracting decimals including a mix of whole numbers and decimals, different decimal places and complements of 1 e.g =1 Children continue to use number in context including measurement; extend and apply understanding of the number system to decimals and fractions. Read Roman numerals to 1,000 and recognise years recognised in Roman numerals.
Targets in Year 5 Number & Place Value Pupils should be taught throughout that decimals, percentages and fractions are different ways of expressing proportions and have equivalences. E.g 100% is 1 1% is 1/100, 50% is 50/ % is 25/100 Pupils should continue counting backwards and forwards in fractions, including bridging 0. Compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number. Identify, name and write equivalent fractions of a given fraction, represented visually, including tenths and hundredths. Connect fractions with division and division with remainders, using the numberline and other models, moving towards improper and mixed fractions. Recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one form to the other and write mathematical statements greater than one as a mixed number e.g. 2/5 + 4/5 = 6/5 = 1 1/5 Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and denominators that are multiples of the same number. Extend to calculations that exceed 1 as a mixed number. Multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, supported by materials and diagrams Read and write decimal numbers as fractions e.g. 71/100 = 0.71 Recognise and use thousandths and relate them to tenths, hundredths and decimal equivalents. Understand percentage as the number of parts per 100 and write percentages as a fraction with denominator 100 and as a decimal fraction.

Use short and long multiplication Identify multiples and factors including finding all factor pairs of a number, and common factors of two numbers Solve problems involving all four operations where larger numbers are used by decomposing them into their factors Multiply whole numbers and those involving decimals by 10, 100 & 1000 Understand and use multiplication and division as inverses including in problems involving missing numbers and balancing equations Solve problems involving multiplication and division including scaling by simple fractions Know and use the vocabulary of prime numbers, prime factors and composite (non-prime) Establish whether a number up to 100 is prime and recall prime numbers to 19 Recognise and square and cube numbers and associated notation
Targets in Year 5 Division Identify factors, including finding all factor pairs of a number, and common factors of two numbers Practise and extend the formal written method of short division: numbers up to four-digits by a one-digit number Interpret non-integer answers to division by expressing results in different ways according to the context, including with remainders, as fractions, as decimals or by rounding as appropriate for the context 98/4 = 24r2 = 24 ½ = 24.5 rounded - 25 Use multiplication and division as inverses. Solve problems involving division including scaling down and ratio, e.g scale drawings or converting measures, as well as other multi-step problems in different contexts. Divide whole numbers and those involving decimals by 10, 100 & 1000
Targets in Year 5 Measurement Understand and use approximate equivalences between metric units and common imperials units such as inches, pounds and pints Measure and calculate the perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes in cm and m. This includes using the relations of perimeter or area to find unknown lengths. Calculate and compare the area of rectangles (including squares), using the formula for the area of a rectangle. This includes using standard units, square cm (cm2) and square metres (m2). Estimate the area of regular and irregular shapes. Estimate volume (e.g. using 1 cm3 blocks to build cuboids and cubes and capacity e.g. using water)
Targets in Year 5 Shapes, Position and Direction Use the properties of rectangles to deduce related facts and find missing lengths and angles Pupils use angle sum facts and other properties to make deductions about missing angles and relate these to missing number problems. Distinguish between regular and irregular polygons based on reasoning about equal sides and angles. Identify 2D and 3D shapes, including cubes and cuboids, from 2D representations. Know angles are measured in degrees: estimate and compare acute, obtuse and reflect angles. Draw given angles, measure them in degrees using a protractor, calculate angles in a straight line. Use the term diagonal and discuss the angles formed between sides, between diagonals and parallel sides.
Identify: angles at a point and one whole turn (360°) angles at a point on a straight line and half a turn (180°) other multiples of (90°) Complete patterns with up to two lines of symmetry Identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know the shape has not changed. Recognise and use reflection and translation in a variety of diagrams, including continuing to use a grid and co-ordinates in the first quadrant. Draw the position of a shape after a translation or reflection (reflection line parallel to the x and y axes).
Statistics and Handling Data Answer a question by identifying which data to collect. Select appropriate representations of data. Solve comparison, sum and difference problems using information presented in a line graph. Pupils connect their work on co-ordinates and scales to their interpretation of time graphs. Complete, read and interpret information in tables, including timetables. Answer a set of related questions by collecting, selecting and organising relevant data; draw conclusions, using ICT to present features, and identify further questions to ask
