What is “action research”?

Action Research It integrates research into the work settings (Guskey, 2000) It is a spiraling cycle of problem identification and solving (Johnson, 1993) Teachers should observe students closely, analyzing their needs, and adjust the curriculum to fit the needs (Hubbard & Power, 1999)

PLANNING DELIVERY FOLLOW-UP EVALUATION

Categories Individual Teacher Research Collaborative Action Research School-wide Action Research (Calhoun, 1993)

Individual Teacher Research All the research questions can be found in the current field  To solve the problems shown in their work fields  To focus on his or her classroom ( 回到教學現場 )

Collaborative Action Research Co-teachers in one classroom instructing a specific group of students Team of teachers focusing on a grade level issue Teacher and district, educational agency, or university personnel learning and studying a particular instructional practice Group of teachers in the same school studying the same instructional concern

School-wide Action Research School-wide action research is a school reform initiative Every faculty member of the school is involved in studying a specific issue identified from school data

How to Choose a Topic To depend on the researcher’s ability and issues happening in the work fields To be unique or appealing e.g. Do reports care about the lowest score of NTU entrance examination? x

Reflect on: Teaching effectiveness – better understanding, grades, attitude towards learning, teaching materials and acquisition of the key competencies Classroom management & discipline – better student behaviour (punctuality, reduced disruptions in class, better attention span) Use of realia (e.g. IT) - effective use of IT to deliver the content

Reflect on: Curriculum innovation - interdisciplinary efforts using Pmodel or similar frameworks eg. PBL Assessment methodologies - use of alternative assessment tools – student portfolios, checklists, peer assessment, student reflections Development of students through CCA - leadership skills, self-esteem, personal development
