Then write today’s verb and draw a picture to help you remember the meaning of the verb. On the back side of the same index card, write the meaning of the verb in English. Write a sentence in Spanish saying….. “Yesterday, I injured my knee playing basketball.”

Ch. 1 Goals “En el consultorio” Learn vocabulary to talk about medical visits (the parts of the body, illnesses, & accidents) Culture: Learn about health services in Spanish- speaking countries

Vocabulario: Los accidentes Lastimarse – to injure (part of your body) Romperse – to break (part of your body) Torcerse – to sprain (part of your body) Caerse – to fall down (oneself) Doler (o:ue) – to hurt *Notice how this verb works like the verb GUSTAR. The subject is NOT who hurts, but what part of the body hurts! (Examples: Me duele la cabeza = My head is hurting me.) Me duelen las piernas. = My legs are hurting me.  NOTE: With parts of the body, you don’t use possessive adjectives (mi, tu, su nuestro/a, etc.), you simply use the article! It’s helpful to read it backwards!

Una visita a la médica: Speaking and listening skills are essential in medical situations, especially if you are abroad in a Spanish- speaking country.  You and a partner are going to write a scene about someone’s visit to the doctor or emergency room due to an accident or illness. - Student 1 will play the role of the doctor. - Student 2 will play the role of the patient or the friend/relative of the patient. Once the dialogue is written, you will be presenting it to the class!

Let’s imagine you go to the doctor…. 1) The doctor asks you how you feel 2) You tell the doctor the reason for your visit (your symptoms/aches & when/how it occurred) 3) The doctor gives you a diagnosis & a treatment plan (prescribes medicine, rest, etc.). BE CREATIVE! YOU WILL HAVE TO PERFORM IT! Some useful verbs: Tener = to have Pensar (e:ie) = to think Tomar = to take (medicine) Doler (o:ue) = to hurt Necesitar = to need Lastimarse = to injure Vomitar = to vomit Caerse = to fall down Deber = should Romperse = to break Recomendar (e:ie) = to recommend Descansar = to rest Torcerse (o:ue) = to sprain/twist

Proof read your writing: Did I use a variety of medical related vocabulary? Do I have all of the necessary accents & punctuation marks? Did I use the correct verb tense? (present/past) Do all subjects & verb conjugations agree? Do all the nouns & adjectives agree in gender & number? Do all the articles & nouns agree? Do my sentences flow and read easily? (Is my word order correct?)
