HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND YOUR ANCILLARY TASK? By Karishma Thakeria

Ancillary Tasks ◦ I chose to produce a poster and film review to help advertise and promote my film to my target audience (this was two out of the three options stated within the assignment brief). Majority of the colours that I used for both pieces of work were bold and contrasted with some of the lighter colours, this helped the work to stand out and look creative. ◦ Film posters are an important method in order to promote a film. It is essential that they capture the intended target audience’s attention so that it will urge them to go and see the film. It is a method of communication as well between the audience and the creators of the film. ◦ The film review also helps to promote the film by evaluating the outcome: giving a positive or negative verdict of the film. If the review gives positive feedback, it is very likely that the target audience will want to watch the film. I chose to create a review that portrayed my film in a positive light alongside creating a poster that creatively advertised my film.

Film Poster: Analysis Part 1 The colours used within my film poster help to make my poster look creative and helps to engage with the target audience as a range of colours are being used. The dark yet bold background allows the other images within the poster to stand out such as the vibrant Moon and the protagonist, along with the white/silver text which stands out against the dark background. All of these conventions help to ‘bring together’ the poster and really helps to depict the narrative of my film. Along with this, the text also compliments the background: the main title of the film is called ‘The Crescent’ and the font used to create this title is called: ‘Moonstar’ (found online). I chose this font because of its authentic style. The design consists of the letters having stars around them, which again relates the poster and the narrative of the film. The following tagline: ‘What If The Moon Was Made Out Of Cheese?’ I chose to have a more compressed and bold style font. This allows both fonts to look eye-catching due to their sizing and design.

Film Poster: Analysis Part 2 The stars that are placed in the background were added on an online photo editor called: ‘PicMonkey’, everything else that is shown on the poster was created on Photoshop. Having the combination of both software's allowed me to successfully create and engaging poster which helps to depict the narrative of the animated film as much of it takes place within space, and on the Moon. I find that the colour scheme works well on the poster and the fonts are clear and bold. Overall, I think that having the poster is very effective in order to promote the film as it gives the target audience a small insight in what to expect from the film. I think that both pieces (the poster and film) work effectively as a combination.

Inspiration From Other Film Posters When researching and looking at different film posters for animated films, I found this poster most appealing due to the effective colour scheme that makes it eye-catching for the viewer. Although my final product doesn’t look entirely like this, I added original ideas to my poster but wanted to have a captivating colour scheme that reflects the narrative of my film and so I decided to have a space background which I created on Photoshop. I used a mixture of blues and purples to create the entire background on my poster along with stars that I added on PicMonkey, I felt that this would be effective in order to create an appealing poster. Overall, I was pleased with how my poster turned out and saw this movie poster (left image) as a source of inspiration for my piece specifically the colour scheme that makes the poster eye-catching. I also like how the image is centred on the poster “Reach For The Star” as it indicates to the audience what they will expect to see in the film such as characters and environments which I have mirrored on my poster.

Film Review The same font for the title of the film was used within my film review as well: ‘Moonstar’, I wanted to use this distinct font again as it makes the review look more appealing. I also applied the same font to the tagline which is in blue underneath the main title. This helps to reinforce what was conveyed on the poster along with the narrative. I chose to keep the release date section on the left hand-side of the poster in bold as I wanted it to be easily distinguishable from the main text that describes the film. I featured the protagonist within the image along with the stars that I added on ‘PicMonkey’ too, this helps to reinforce what was displayed on the poster and potentially help the target audience become aware of the characters that are in the film. Overall, I feel that the film review was successful in conveying my film and the narrative in a positive light (alongside the film) however, the film poster looks more creative and I feel that the composition of the poster, the colours, images and font helps to engage with my target audience.

Inspiration From Other Film Reviews I used Empire Magazine’s film review as a source of inspiration for my own film review. I specifically admired the professional layout of the magazine that provided analysis of the film and a central image at the top of the page which reflected mainly on the characters within the film. I wanted to also reflect this in my work so I put my protagonist’s image on the top image in my film review and used a similar text layout to the review on the left. Instead of having the title of the film below the image in my film review, I decided to place it on top of the image as I felt that the colour of the font (silver) and the design would stand out on the purple/blue background of the image, I made the release date information and other important information about the film in bold and black and grey as I felt that it would help to make it stand out on the page. I made sure that the main body of text was in a smaller and a professional looking font to mirror what I saw on the Empire review along with giving a verdict and quote to give my film a positive response. Things that I didn’t include was a boarder which is seen in the review on the left, instead I highlighted the date and page number at the bottom of my review on a grey bar and also underneath the quote.

Final Film & Ancillary Task ◦ Evaluating all three final outcomes, I believe that all three pieces of work: the film, the film poster and film review work with each other to represent my film in a positive manner. As a combination, they all show some similarities such as the colour scheme (mainly darker colours in the background and brighter colours in the foreground). This shows how all three pieces of work interlink with one another to depict the film. Therefore, all three pieces of work are effective as a combination.
