What is the format of the SAT Writing Section? Lasts one hour in total. Scored on a scale of 200 to 800. Two sections: Multiple choice and essay.

How are the Multiple Choice and Essay sections different? Multiple ChoiceEssay 35 minutes 49 questions Worth 70% of the total Writing Section score These questions ask students to identify sentence errors, to improve sentence structure, and to correct grammatical errors. 25 minutes Worth 30% of the total Writing Section score The essay tests students’ ability to produce a coherent argument through cohesive paragraph and essay structure. The essay tests students’ ability to articulate a point of view on an issue and support it.

How is the essay scored? The essay is scored on a scale of 1 to 6 by two readers who are trained educators, for a total score of 2 to 12. According to collegeboard.com, 98% of the time, the two readers agree on the score of the essay within one point. If two readers disagree on the score of the essay outside of one point, a third reader is brought in to settle the difference.
