2 The Goal in Providing Internet Access zTo promote educational excellence at CISD by facilitating resource sharing, innovation, and communications.

3 Why Do We Need An Acceptable Use Policy? zAccess to the Internet brings the possibility of encountering material that may not be considered to be of educational value in the context of the school setting zThe smooth operation of the network relies upon the proper conduct of the users who must adhere to the strict guidelines.

4 General Use zOnly students who have returned a signed AUP signature page and who are under direct supervision of District Instructional employees may use a district computer. zStudents access privileges will fall under one of the following designations: yInternet and Computer Access yComputer Access only (no Internet) yNo Access

5 General Use zStudents may not use any network accounts but their own. zStudents are prohibited from changing any computer settings and/or configurations. zStudents may not install any software including commercial, shareware, freeware, original software and/or utilities. zStudents are not allowed to open computer cases or make modifications to computers.

6 Internet/Electronic Communications Use: zElectronic communications are not private. Network administrators may review electronic communications and logs of Internet sites visited to verify appropriate use. zStudents are expected to use network etiquette by communicating politely and using appropriate language. zStudents are to visit only Internet sites which are appropriate for students and support District learning objectives.

7 Internet/Electronic Communications Use: zStudents must notify their teacher immediately if they encounter any material or electronic communication that is inappropriate. zStudents must not respond to any electronic messages that are inappropriate. zStudents must never agree to get together with anyone they “meet” online.

8 Internet/Electronic Communications Use: zStudents are prohibited from pretending to be someone else; transmitting and/or displaying obscene messages or pictures (pornography). zStudents are prohibited from revealing their names, personal addresses, and/or phone numbers except to request college information. zStudents are prohibited from revealing names, personal addresses, or phone numbers of others.

9 Internet/Electronic Communications Use: zStudents should use only first names in communication outside the district. zStudents may not access or download any programs, files, or information without permission from a teacher (no executable files in their drives). zAll web pages created for the CISD web site must be submitted to the designated campus webmaster for approval.

10 Computer Ethics zStudents are expected to observe copyright laws in their use of electronic media. zStudents are prohibited from using District electronic media for commercial activities and/or political lobbying.

11 Computer Ethics zStudents are prohibited from using computers and the network in a way that would harm another person or disrupt use by others (hacking, uploading/creating viruses, downloading files without permission, intruding on the files or electronic work of others, and/or committing any type of electronic or physical vandalism/theft).

12 Lab Policies zStudents must log in to use the network, unless otherwise instructed by the teacher. zStudents may not add, delete, or move any desktop icons unless directed by the teacher. zStudents may not change any desktop settings unless given permission by the teacher.

13 Lab Policies zStudents should save files to their network drive or a floppy disk, not to the CPS hard drive unless directed to by the teacher. zStudents are not permitted to bring food or drink into any computer lab. zStudents should not print directly from the Internet unless given permission by the teacher.

14 Lab Policies zNo outside software may be used in a classroom setting (games, etc.). zStudents should not play personal CDs on district computers unless given permission by the teacher. zStudents should take care of district equipment, no foreign objects placed in drives, only intact diskettes should be used.

15 Lab Policies zStudents should report any computer problems (software errors, missing or damaged equipment) or changes in the configuration to the teacher immediately. zStudents should use only the computer assigned to them unless directed otherwise by the teacher.

16 Consequences zViolations of any of the policies described above may result in disciplinary action which could include: yloss of computer privileges for any length of time up to the remainder of the school year ySaturday detention yIn School Suspension ySuspension

17 Consequences zViolations of any of the policies described above may result in disciplinary action which could include: yPlacement at the Behavioral Learning Center yExpulsion yFinancial responsibility for all costs associates with system restoration yCriminal charges

18 Disclaimer of Liability zThe District shall not be liable for users’ inappropriate use of electronic communication resources or violations of copyright restrictions, users’ mistakes or negligence, or costs incurred by the user. zThe District shall not be responsible for ensuring the accuracy or usability of any information found on the Internet. zDistrict networks/Internet are provided on as “as is, as available” basis. Uninterrupted service is not guaranteed.
