Shared Governance at ISU Academic Senate

The Academic Senate is the primary governing body at Illinois State University and provides for faculty and student participation in academic governance. (Article V, Section 1, Illinois State University Constitution)

The Academic Senate is the primary governing body at Illinois State University and provides for faculty and student participation in academic governance. (Article V, Section 1, Illinois State University Constitution) The Academic Senate is the primary body to recommend educational policy of the University and to advise the President on its implementation, within the limits established by Illinois legislative statute, the Board of Higher Education, and the Board of Trustees.

Memorandum of Understanding The Academic Senate agrees that the Board of Trustees has final legal authority and that the Academic Senate makes recommendations to the President and the Board of Trustees.

Memorandum of Understanding The Academic Senate agrees that the Board of Trustees has final legal authority and that the Academic Senate makes recommendations to the President and the Board of Trustees. The President and the Board of Trustees agree that the faculty (or appropriate representative bodies, such as the Academic Senate) has primary responsibility for academic issues, faculty affairs issues and educational issues related to student life and is entrusted with the authority to recommend policies on those issues to the President. The President and the Board of Trustees anticipate that these recommendations will be modified or rejected only in exceptional circumstances.

The Board of Trustees anticipates further that, in the interest of open communication, the President will communicate with the Academic Senate concerning any rationale for modification or rejection of an Academic Senate recommendation pertaining to academic issues, faculty affairs issues and education issues related to student life.

Any member of the academic community may bring issues of concern to the Senate through an appropriate Senate committee or an individual senator.

Chairs and directors can… Help us with questions about how best to protect the academic freedom of staff who teach and/or research while remaining within likely court protections – – how have you or your department members seen this implemented elsewhere? – where are the best models? – what problems might you anticipate? – where is academic freedom for GAs best protected?

Chairs and directors can… Lead your departments in revisions per the new “beige book” Lead your D/SFSCs and departments in discussions regarding the practicalities of implementing the proposed sanctions article and other proposed new articles

Questions? If you would like me to visit your department to discuss shared governance and help inform new and existing members about the benefits to them of serving on Senate, please contact me at
