The Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)

Making History Complete CETA text reached in August 2014, marking the end of negotiations. Canada and the EU finished the legal review of the agreement and released the final English language text on February 29, CETA will be one of the most ambitious and comprehensive FTAs ever signed by either Party, and covers namely: –Comprehensive tariff elimination across all sectors –Improved access for goods and services –Greater certainty, transparency, and protection of investments –New opportunities in procurement markets A 2008 Canada-EU joint study showed that CETA could result in a 20% boost in bilateral trade and a €11.6 billion annual increase to the EU economy.

Trade in Services Greece has a balance of trade in services surplus of CAD $297 mln Greece’s main services exports to Canada include information and communications technology (ICT) services and professional and management consulting services.

CETA Timeline Sept : Council of the EU – Informal minister-level Foreign Affairs Committee (Trade) met in Bratislava to discuss CETA state of play Oct. 12: Council of the EU – COREPER (a committee made up of permanent representatives equivalent to ambassadors) renders its official decision on CETA Oct. 18: Council of the EU – Approval of CETA, in an extraordinary Council of Trade Ministers (TBC, in place of General Affairs Council) Oct. 27: Canada-EU Summit – Signature of CETA – Brussels (TBC) Nov. 29: European Parliament – INTA votes on CETA (TBC) Week of Dec. 12 : European Parliament – CETA is voted upon by the full plenary of the European Parliament (TBC). Early 2017: After European Parliament vote, the treaty could be provisionally applied on the date specified by Council 4-5 years from conclusion: Each EU member state must ratify the agreement according to its domestic requirements before the full agreement can come into force. While this process is ongoing, the vast majority of the agreement would be provisionally applied
