“Breakthrough to Nursing: Empowerment through Diversity and Scholarship” BTN Committee: Jennifer Kalenkoski, Chair Amina Aden Katelyn Finnegan Breakthrough to Nursing

Breakthrough To Nursing (BTN)  The primary goal of NSNA’s Breakthrough to Nursing Project is to increase the number of qualified students enrolled in and graduate from nursing schools.  BTN Project was started in 1965 to address NSNA’s concerns regarding national issues and these concerns remain relevant today:  Recruitment and retention  Minority recruitment  Men in the profession  Young students  Non-traditional students  Mentoring and support of all enrolled in professional nursing programs

What drives Breakthrough To Nursing  The faces of our nation  The faces of our patients  The faces of our healthcare workforce

Resolutions that were passed  1.) In Support of Diverse Nursing Students Promoting Nursing Careers to Minority Elementary School Students  2.) Improving Student Nurse Awareness Through Education about Nursing Student Associations at the Chapter, State, and National Level  3.) In Support of Interprofessional Education to Address the Roles, Responsibilities, and Expectations of the Healthcare Team  4.) Improving Professional Support and Advocacy for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual (LCBTQIA) Nurses  5.) Increasing Rural Promotion of Baccalaureate-Prepared Nurses to Address the Rural Nurse Shortage

Goals For  Continue on the previous work done with the Breakthrough to Nursing Stories by increasing the number of stories submitted and utilizing social media and Imprint to highlight stores and make them more accessible to the public and students.  Increase education, resources, and awareness to the underserved communities and school aged students on nursing as a career.  Increase the awareness and knowledge of cultural diversity and sensitivity among nursing students within the profession.  Encourage leadership amongst students to take on roles that help them develop personally and professionally within nursing.

How Goals will be Achieved  The use of separate BTN social media pages will help move the mission of BTN forward in a manner that is easily accessible and frequently viewed by students.  Encouraging direct attention to the underserved communities and the younger generation by promoting existing programs like Scrubs Camp, Visiting local schools, and utilizing Johnson & Johnson’s Discover Nursing resources.  Highlighting a different BTN topic every month releasing facts, statistics, and videos on the social media pages to raise awareness.  Inspire students to take on an active leadership role in NSNA by providing tips and advice on the BTN pages and in seminars.
