ZINAIDA MANŽUCH Institute of Library and Information Science Faculty of Communication Vilnius University, Lithuania LIDA 2009, DUBROVNIK, 26 MAY 2009 Collaborative networks of archives, libraries and museums in digitisation initiatives

Introduction Presentation aim – to discover collaboration patterns of archives, libraries and museums in digitisation Digitisation – strategic management activity Collaboration – a necessary activity to implement digitisation Research was a part of NUMERIC project (

Types of collaboration in digitisation Collaboration between archives, libraries and museums Joint efforts with public and commercial partners:  With organisations that have similar objectives or related collections  With governmental and other organisations being continuous donors/participants of digitisation initiatives  With commercial enterprises supporting digitisation to pursue economic benefits Outsourcing digitisation services

Research design Research questions:  To what extent archives, libraries and museums engage in collaborative networks?  What types of institutions archives, libraries and museums tend to collaborate with the most?  What types of contractors archives, libraries and museums tend to collaborate with the most?  What are the differences and commonalities of collaborative networks of archives, libraries and museums? Data source: NUMERIC questionnaire comment section Methods: qualitative & quantitative content analysis combined Measure unit – collaboration intensiveness 134 institutions provided information about partners, 200 institutions provided information about contractors

Networks of partners in archives, libraries and museums

Networks of contractors in archives, libraries and museums

Results General tendencies:  Low average collaboration intensiveness with digitisation partners  Self-oriented networks of partners  Traditional collaboration patterns  Well-developed relations with commercial contractors Tendencies in a specific institution:  Museums had the largest partners’ & contractors’networks  Archives had the smallest partners’ & contractors’ networks  Library partners’ networks were the most self-oriented  Libraries were the most active collaborators in partners’ networks  Archives were the most active collaborators in contractors’ networks

Conclusions Reasons for engagement in networks:  High demand for resources not available in memory institutions  Safe and well-known collaboration landscape Although sufficient variety of partners/contractors were present most collaborations are at the stages of early exploration
