Presentation transcript:

CLASS of 2018 #GoToCollegeCAVS

Three Main “Jobs” for Junior Year Grades! Grades! Grades! Grades! Grades! Final GPA by end of Junior Year! Test Scores… Hit the test score mark by June. List of Universities and Colleges … spend time exploring and sampling.

GRADES! You will submit a Sixth Semester Transcript with each application. Ready August 1, A Sixth Semester Transcript will contain your grades through the end of your junior year. We will rank for admission in late July. LTHS is a non-ranking school except for Top 10%. Schools with deadlines in the fall or January 1 will likely not see your senior grades for admission. Each semester’s grades have less impact on the total GPA.

GPA – Weighted and Unweighted Two GPA’s are listed on your transcript, one an average of your weighted grades (100) and the other an unweighted GPA (4.0). Each course listed will have a fall and spring semester grade plus an average for the year. Semester grades are used to calculate GPA. Honors points or bump points are not visible on the transcript.

Example: We have removed the slide containing the sample transcript. You may use a copy of your transcript for this section.

Ordering Transcripts Order Official Transcripts from the Registrar in the Main Counseling Office. Allow one week to process. All transcripts sent instate to Texas Public schools will be sent through the state data system call TREX. We can track. Out of state public are generally mailed. Private schools may be uploaded into Common Application. More later on that.

TEST SCORES Now is the time to begin taking the ACT and SAT. We suggest that you take one of each and then choose the one you feel the most comfortable taking. Take that test at least two more times. Students are not familiar with timed testing. Neither ACT or SAT count off for wrong answers. But the score goes up with more correct answers. Have acceptable test scores by June, 2017!

TEST SCORES What are acceptable test scores? Texas Success Initiative is a good minimum standard. ACT Composite 23, English 19, Math 19 SAT Reading 480, Math 530 No total…. Yes, take the writing at least once or twice. There is a difference between an Admission test score and a Scholarship test score.

TEST SCORES You don’t need to send in test scores when you test, however, there will be a charge and a time lag if you have them sent to your schools at a later time. LTHS will receive reports of your scores if you list us as your high school. Test scores do not go on your transcript. LTHS test scores are not official. LTHS #

MAKE A LIST OF SCHOOLS There is plenty to learn at every college but if you are not happy with the environment you risk not being successful in your classes. North or South – the weather does matter! Big City or Rural environment – do you need a mall to be happy? A place to fish or hike? Public or Private – a big difference in cost. Big School or Small School – what college life do you want?

VISIT COLLEGES Juniors are allowed two days of excused absence to visit Universities. Fill out and turn in the LTHS College Visit form found on the Attendance link on the main web page. Do that before your trip. Bring a letter from the universities that you visit. They will provide you with the letter. Turn the letter in to Mrs. Chalmers in Attendance to excuse your absence.

College Lists By June of 2017, have a list of 4 – 6 colleges/universities that you like and want to apply to. Each university will charge an application fee of $60 to $90 dollars. Make a folder for each school that list requirements and deadlines. Note how you will apply.

College Applications Apply Texas Common Application The Universal Application

ACC Dual Credit Classes Dual Credit classes are earned college credits. The grades are a permanent part of your college transcript. Dual Credit classes are a great way to get the basics out of the way and save time and money. All Texas Public Universities will accept the credits especially if you stick to Core 45.

ACC Dual Credit Classes The very most important thing to remember is that ACC is not LTHS and LTSH is not ACC. LTHS does not control the professors method of teaching or requirements. We cannot communicate with ACC regarding your student. You cannot drop out of ACC classes and enter back into LTHS classes.

ACC Dual Credit Classes Step #1 is to apply for admission to ACC. Step #2 is to submit qualifying test scores. Step #3 is to be advised. Step #4 is to enroll in courses. We will assist with all steps.

Texas Success Initiative TSI is a college readiness standard set by the State of Texas. ACT 23 Composite 19 English 19 Math SAT 500 Critical Reading 530 Math You may be admitted to a Texas University with scores lower than TSI, however, the university may require you to take developmental courses in English and Math (read High school courses) and charge you tuition dollars for the same classes we teach for free.

November Junior Conferences In November we will host all junior students and their parents for a 30 minute pre- graduation /college readiness conference. It will be a time to review your transcript to check for graduation delinquencies. We will discuss your college plans, review any testing you have completed and talk about the application process. Watch for the appointment calendar in early October.

Thanks for Coming Questions??
