Poetry Report (Sample)  The author of the poem I am going to present is George Gordon Byron. Byron is the greatest English poet of the XIXth century.

 Lord Byron was one of the best athletes of his time and one of the most popular London dandies. However, he became famous because of his poetry.

Poetry Report Sample  Byron lived a short life. Even though he was a British aristocrat, he died fighting for the freedom of Greece. And to the freedom of Greece he dedicated one of his poems.

 When a man hath no freedom to fight for at home,  Let him combat for that of his neighbors;  Let him think of the glories of Greece and of Rome,  And get knock'd on the head for his labors, . 

Poetry Report Sample  To do good to mankind is the chivalrous plan,  And is always as nobly requited;  Then battle for freedom wherever you can,  And, if not shot or hang'd, you'll get knighted

Form/Rhythm  This poem consists of two quatrains. The poem has rhyme. The rhyme pattern is ABAB.

Theme  The theme of the poem is love and fight for freedom for which a worthy man should sacrifice everything he has, including his life. Lord Byron did it.

Diction  Byron uses some archaic forms, like “hath” instead of “has”, and “combat” instead of “fight”. He also uses the word “knight” as a verb, not as a noun.

Figurative Language  In this poem, Byron uses three metaphors. The first one is “get knocked on the head for his labors”, meaning to be ready to suffer and struggle while fighting for the right cause.

Poetry Report Sample The second metaphor is “a chivalrous plan” meaning a noble and good intention. And the third metaphor is “get knighted” meaning to be honored and rewarded by kings and governments.

Theme  Jose Marti devoted his life to the fight for independence and unity of Latin American nations. However, most of his poems emphasize the theme of love and friendship, like the following poem:

Poetry Sample 2  Cultivo una rosa blanca En julio como en enero, Para el amigo sincero Que me da su mano franca.  Y para el cruel que me arranca El corazon con que vivo, Cardo ni ortiga cultivo, Cultivo una rosa blanca.

Form/Rhythm  The poem consists of two quatrains. The rhyme pattern of the poem is ABBA.

Theme  The theme of this short poem is love and humanism. The author contends that true love and friendship should be extended not only to those who love us but also onto those who hate us.

Figurative Language  The author uses symbolism. Rose symbolizes peace and friendship. July and January symbolize time.

Figurative Language  He also uses metaphor, “tears out the heart”, meaning that the person is hurting him deeply. Maybe this is about a woman with whom he unsuccessfully fell in love.
