1 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. Hebrews 2 (ESV) Warning Against Neglecting Salvation 10October 4, 2016Hebrews 2:1-18

5 For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. Hebrews 2 (ESV) The Founder of Salvation 11October 4, 2016Hebrews 2:1-18

10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” Hebrews 2 (ESV) The Founder of Salvation 12October 4, 2016Hebrews 2:1-18

14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Brief Exhortation to the Reader  Concern of the author is that the reader’s “drift away” from the message of the Gospel  Certified by “signs and wonders and various miracles”  Certified by the “gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will” Warning / Parenthetical Application (vv.1-4) 15October 4, 2016Hebrews 2:1-18

The Full Humanity of the Son The paradox of the superiority of the Son to angels, and yet, by their nature, angels being superior to human beings “a little while lower” indicates the temporary character of the subordination The coronation and glory received by Jesus at God’s right hand are attributed to his obedience: “because he suffered death.” – Philippians 2:8-9)Philippians 2:8-9 Hagner: “The humanity of the Son of God was indispensable to the fulfillment of God’s saving purpose for the world.” 16October 4, 2016Hebrews 2:1-18

sensus plenior A deeper meaning of the passage that goes beyond what the original writer of Scripture intended For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. October 4, 2016Hebrews 2:1-18

Psalm 8 18 Poem of praise to the Creator that marvels at the wonder of creation Wonder at concern for mere humans [Initial Meaning] Jesus completely identified with humanity Suffered death Crowned with Glory [Deeper Meaning] 22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Hebrews 9:22 October 4, 2016Hebrews 2:1-18

Goal of the Incarnation: The death of the Son Hebrews is fundamentally about the death of the Son of God and how it stands as the fulfillment of the sacrificial ritual of the old covenant. Eight Reasons for the Incarnation 1.To fulfill God’s purpose for Man (2:5-9a) 2.To taste death (2:9b) 3.To bring many sons to glory (2:10-13) 4.To destroy the devil (2:14) 5.To deliver those in bondage (2:15) 6.To become a priest for men (2:16-17a) 7.To make propitiation for sins (2:17b) 8.To provide help for those tested (2:18) 19 Source: Faith That Endures, Page J. Dwight Pentacost October 4, 2016Hebrews 2:1-18

10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Seize, Help: 1949 epilambánomai (from 1909 /epí, "on, fitting" intensifying 2983 /lambánō, "aggressively take") – properly, lay hold of something, showing personal initiative ("focused resolve") that "matches" the seizing (i.e. laying hold of what is "apt, meet") Sin: 266 /hamartía ("sin, forfeiture because missing the mark") is the brand of sin that emphasizes its self-originated (self-empowered) nature, i.e. it is not originated or empowered by God (i.e. not of faith, His inworked persuasion, cf. Ro 14:23) October 4, 2016Hebrews 2:1-18 Goal of the Incarnation: The death of the Son

Questions Review the statement by Hagner: “The humanity of the Son of God was indispensable to the fulfillment of God’s saving purpose for the world.” Agree? Disagree? Is that how you previously viewed His purpose? What ways have you struggled with the God the Old Testament vs the God of the New Testament? What is the difference between the terms justice, mercy and grace? Which one do we tend to emphasize? Why? Do we have a warped view of justice? If so, how? How does it translate to our behavior - At work? At home? On line? 22October 4, 2016Hebrews 2:1-18

Closing Questions? Comments? Closing Prayer 24October 4, 2016Hebrews 2:1-18

Comment Some people who trust Christ for salvation have trouble believing they are completely forgiven, either because of the nature of their sins, or because they come from churches that teach that we must “help” God by making up for our sins. However, God the Father’s total satisfaction with the work of Christ shows us that nothing can be added to what He has done for us. God considered Christ’s work perfect and complete - who are we, therefore, to think that anything could be added to it? 25 Source: Faith That Endures, Page 57 J.
