WELCOME TO IB: LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE MRS. ADAMS Please find your seat and respond to the following quote in your journal or on a piece of notebook paper. A good response makes connections, paraphrases, and/or formulates a discussion. You can write in prose, poetic form, or with pictures. 5 minutes "We keep moving forward opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." -Walt Disney

TODAY'S OBJECTIVES AND AGENDA Students will be able to understand the importance of trying something new by discussing the importance of curiosity through small-group and whole-class discussion and by completing an activity asking students to spark their curiosity. Students will be able to understand the operation of the class by going through the syllabus and classroom expectations. 1.Anticipation: Journal and Discussion (20 minutes) 2.Activity: Curiosity (10 minutes) 3.Syllabus (20-30 minutes) 4.Questions?

CIRCLE DISCUSSION: "We keep moving forward opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." -Walt Disney Green: What does this quote mean to you? Purple: What does the quote say/reveal about humans and society? Yellow: What connections did you make to the quote? Red: Name something you are curious of learning more about. Orange: What do you think curiosity has to do with language and literature?

Are you curious enough?

ACTIVITY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: ▪ What are the positives of trying new things? ▪ What are the negatives of trying new things? ▪ What do the different items symbolize? ▪ Why is it important to be curious about different cultures/societies?

LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE? ▪ What do you think you are going to be studying or learning in this class? Partner discussion.

WHAT IS IB LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE? ▪ Four-Part Course: ▪ Two parts junior year ▪ Part I: Language and Literature ▪ Part II: Language and Mass Communication ▪ Language and Literature will have students develop/strengthen critical thinking skills and encourage students to analyze and view texts through different cultural/societal lenses. ▪ History and Evolution of Language (I) ▪ Language and Society/Culture (I) ▪ Language and Gender/Sex (I) ▪ Language and Power/Knowledge (I) ▪ Power of Persuasion/Rhetoric (II) ▪ Language and Pop Culture (II) ▪ Language and Mass Media (II)

COURSE ASSESSMENTS Written Tasks: 1.Written Task 1: Imaginative piece in which you break out of the traditional writing mode. This will still demonstrate your understanding of the course work and your ability to analyze critically. 2.Written Task 2: This is a critical response to a text written in response to one of the six prescribed questions from the IB Language A: Literature and Language Guide. Further Oral Activity: You will complete two FOAs (Part I and Part II) that will require you to use spoken language to deliver information to your classmates. Marks are a form of INTERNAL ASSESSMENT and the marks will be added together with the INDIVIDUAL ORAL COMMENTARY (senior year) and divided by two to give you a score. A subject committee will convene at the end of each exam session to decide upon grade boundaries. Other Assessments: English 11 SOL, quizzes, tests, projects, practice papers, annotations, homework, classwork, etc.

Additional Information Read the syllabus in its entirety for homework Complete the "Student/Parent Information" sheet, read the letter, and complete the blog assignment on Fusion by Friday. Blog assignment can be found with directions on Fusion under “Discussion Posts”
