Stitchery

Stitchery refers to working with needle and thread. This could be functional sewing (clothes, bags, pillows) or decorative (embroidery, applique) which you often find in craft objects.

For this project you will use some form of stitchery to create your final work of art. You may choose to incorporate your batik fabrics into this project. The project is very open and you may choose which stitch techniques to use for your project. Both functional and non-functional approaches will be acceptable. *Develop a sketchbook of plans and ideas

Stitchery from a Technical perspective: Consider using your batik fabrics as material for this project. Using this fabric you could: Create a pillow cover Create a wall hanging with 3D elements, including embellishing the fabric with embroidery or applique Techniques we will cover: Machine sewing – plain stitch, plain hem, making a pillow cover. Hand sewing – straight stitch, running stitch, whip stitch, slip stitch. Embroidery stitches – chain stitch, blanket stitch, french knot, satin stitch, lazy daisy Applique

Whip stitch

Slip stitch This is the best way to close up a pillow or stuffed object. Step by Step Instructions

Embroidery stitches –

Chain stitch – often used for outlines and to fill spaces Pull needle through to front at 1. Make a loop and insert needle next to 1, coming out again at 2 holding the thread under the needle as you pull. Insert needle again at 2 and continue.

Blanket stitch – decorative edge stitch Pull needle through to front at 1. Insert needle at 2 and come out again at 3 holding the thread under the needle as you pull the stitch tight.

French knots – adds texture Pull needle through to front at 1. Holding thread taut with left hand, use right hand to wind the needle around the thread twice. Insert needle back into fabric, holding thread firmly so the knot is flush to the fabric.

Satin stitch – used to fill in small areas Pull needle through to front at 1. Make single straight stitches, inserting the needle at 2 and out again at 3. Keep stitches very close together and continue to fill the area or shape.

Lazy daisy stitch – used to create a flower Pull needle though to front at 1. Make a loop and insert again right next to 1. Come out again at 2 holding the thread under the needle as you pull tight. Insert the needle at 3 and move onto the next petal.
