ACADEMIC INTEGRITY 32

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Academic integrity is very important to us. It’s your responsibility to know our policy. Not reading the syllabus is not an excuse. If you cheat, you will get caught. Penalties are severe and strictly enforced. –1st Time: You lose 100+ points, a full letter grade. –2nd Time: You get an F for the course, even if you had no warning of the first violation. 33

HOW TO AVOID VIOLATIONS Don’t work with other people. Homeworks are not group projects. Never give files to anyone for any reason. Don’t leave your files on a public computer or anywhere else someone could take them. Don’t let others use your computer. Don’t share or reuse files, even blank ones, because they may contain hidden details about the person who made the original file. 34

START WITH YOUR OWN NEW FILE EVERY TIME Never give or take a file from anyone else. If you did not start your assignment with a brand new file that you yourself created, you have cheated. Do not share files with friends, even if the only thing in them is an import of the starter data for the assignment. 35

KEY POINTS If you cheat, you will get caught. –Every semester, 5% of students cheat. –Every semester, 5% of students get the penalties. –Every semester, about a dozen students try to cheat twice. They are failed, period. We have tools to find cheating, even if you use a file from a different section or semester. CS101 is not hard enough to bother with the risks of cheating. Learn the material, do the work, and you will be fine. 36

POLICY ACKNOWLEDGMENT FORM Before you can get credit for any of your work, you must sign the CS101 Policy Acknowledgement Form.CS101 Policy Acknowledgement Form By signing this form, you certify you understand and will follow CS101 policies. If you have questions, ask before signing. If you think something may be questionable, you probably shouldn’t do it. 37

NEXT CLASS… Data Analysis: –Effective Internet Searches – tal-content.pdf (read pages 2&3. Feel free to me with any questions) tal-content.pdf 46

ONLINE RESOURCES Search engines such as Google and Bing Image search engines such as Google Images Google Scholar for journal articles and scholarly works Google News for news, blogs, and newspaper articles WVU Libraries databases for access to journal articles, magazines, newspapers, and other resources 47

SEARCH ENGINES They are only as good as your search string Start with specific terms If unsuccessful, then use generalized terms Use “” for exact match. Ex: “Morgantown, West Virginia” would exclude pages that only have Morgantown, WV. You can also use “” around a specific word in a phrase or specific phrase in a sentence. 48

SEARCH ENGINES Type Drugstore Pharmacy, that will search pages that have both words. Add OR in between to search for either word Use minus signs (-) to exclude words. Morgantown –West Virginia would be a good try to look for cities called Morgantown not in WV 49

SEARCH ENGINES Restrict you search to a website: –Commencement site: wvu.edu Restrict search to certain file types: –Add filetype: pdf (Doc, XLS, PPT).sdd Switch tabs (right below search box) for images, news, videos, etc. Use google scholar ( for scholarly works (journals, conference proceedings, etc) 50

OTHER RESOURCES Wikipedia – free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Good way to gain basic understanding of a subject WVU Libraries – ( It subscribes to a wide range of research databases which can be helpful for locating articles. A full list of databases arranged by subject is available at One of the most popular databases is LexisNexis Academic, which provides access to the archives of newspapers from around the whole world

NEXT CLASS… Data Analysis: –Download data and extract ZIP file contents – content.pdf (read pages 6-9) content.pdf –Answer analysis questions Excel Chapter 1 (Vol 1 – p & ) –Create a new workbook –Adjust sheets –Enter data Excel Chapter 10 (Vol 2 – p ) –Import XML and CSV data –Import from an Access database 52

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, HAVE A GREAT DAY! HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT CLASS!
