Presentation transcript:

SUNY Mandate (issued May 20 th ): *All campuses will submit a SP for Diversity & Inclusion to System Admin. by Nov. 1, 2016 *Each campus plan must include the following: 1)A student recruitment strategy that will enable the campus to enroll a student population that is increasingly representative of the diversity of its primary service region and the State as a whole; 2)A student retention and completion strategy wherein the campus strives to increase the rate of completion for all students and close any gaps in the completion rates; 3)An administrative, faculty and staff recruitment and retention strategy that continuously improves campus efforts to increase diversity and inclusion toward the goal that faculty and staff are representative of all segments of the population of New York State.

Summer Working Group (11 members, including co-chairs): *Tasked with developing the first draft of the SP (assumption from the start that many others would help revise the draft) *Worked with campus data, reviewed other institutions’ plans & national best practices for such planning *Subgroups organized into 4 key areas to facilitate the work: 1) Recruitment of & Support Services for Historically Underserved Students 2) Recruitment & Retention of Diverse Faculty, Admin. & Staff 3) Campus Climate 4) Academic Programs * Goals, Objectives, Action Items drafted

Work Ahead: * Review/vetting sessions scheduled throughout September (specific campus groups & open forums) *Collecting, reviewing, using feedback—including possible action items community members submit— in further developing the SP *Final draft of SP will come back to Senate, and ultimately to the President’s Cabinet, for endorsement Senate’s Role Now: *To promote understanding of the process in progress *To encourage members of the campus community to review the first draft, provide feedback to the co-chairs (Terrence Mitchell & myself)
