Scheme of Redemption

Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind - who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet Slide 2

Main concepts of our study "Scheme of Redemption" - The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as one book, with 66 different chapters, and the real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin Slide 3

Main concepts of our study Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Genesis 3-12 – “The Background of Redemption” Genesis – “Redemption through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph” Slide 4

Recap Redemption thru the patriarchs God makes three main promises to Abraham A great nation would come forth from Abraham (Genesis 12:2, 13:16, & 15:5) His descendants would receive the land of Canaan as an inheritance (Genesis 12:7, 13:15 & 17) Through Abraham, all the families/nations of the earth would be blessed (Genesis 12:3) Slide 5

Recap Redemption thru the patriarchs God promises Abraham an heir/child After 10 years of nothing happening, Abraham takes matters into his own hands and Ishmael is born Circumcision prescribed as a sign of the covenant that God made with Abraham Slide 6

Recap Last week – Discussed the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah Something to point out City of Zoar spared from destruction because Lot was there What does this say to us today? Our faithfulness to God has the ability to change things! Zoar spared mostly because of Abraham (“chosen vessel”) rather than Lot Slide 7

Major events of Abraham’s life Slide 8 75 Abraham leaves Haran Receives initial promises 86 Ishmael is born 99 Isaac promised Abraham and Ishmael circumcised 100 Isaac is born 175 Abraham Dies ~25 Years

Abraham & Sarah promised a child Genesis 18: Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “There, in the tent.” He said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; Sarah was past childbearing. Slide 9

Abraham & Sarah promised a child Genesis 18: Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am so old?’ Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” Sarah denied it however, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh.” Slide 10

The growth of Abraham’s faith Genesis 15:1 – “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.” God tells Abraham this, yet for the second time Abraham lies about Sarah being his wife in Genesis 20 Abraham sojourned to Gerar, informed the people that Sarah was his sister, and the king, Abimelech, had Sarah brought to him God came to Abimelech in a dream and threatened him with death and calamity Abimelech confronted Abraham about his lie Slide 11

The growth of Abraham’s faith Abraham’s reasoning to Abimelech Genesis 20:10-13 – And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What have you encountered, that you have done this thing?” 11 Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely there is no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife. 12 Besides, she actually is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife; Slide 12

The growth of Abraham’s faith Even though God had told Abraham that He would be a shield to Abraham, Abraham’s still feared If God told you that He would be a shield to you, how would you feel? Would you feel invincible? Matthew 28:18-20 – And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Slide 13

Isaac is born Genesis 21:1-4 – Then the Lord took note of Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had promised. So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God had spoken to him. Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac. Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. Slide 14

Isaac is born Genesis 21:5-8 – Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Sarah said, “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.” And she said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. Slide 15

Isaac is born Hebrews 11:11-12 – By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised. Therefore there was born even of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants as the stars of heaven in number, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore. Slide 16 Genesis 15:22, 22:17, 26:4 (Isaac)

Abraham’s faith matures Genesis 22:1-3 – Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. Slide 17

Abraham’s faith matures Genesis 22:3-5 – So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance. Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.” “So Abraham went” (Genesis 12:4) Slide 18

Abraham’s faith matures Genesis 22:6-8 – Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together. Slide 19

Abraham’s faith matures Genesis 22:9-11 – Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Slide 20

Abraham’s faith matures Genesis 22:12-14 – He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son. Abraham called the name of that place The Lord Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the Lord it will be provided.” Slide 21

Abraham’s faith matures Hebrews 11:17 – By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; it was he to whom it was said, “In Isaac your descendants shall be called.” He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead… This had not been done up to this point, and Abraham certainly had not experienced such miraculous power! Slide 22

Promises reiterated Genesis 22:16-18 – By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” Slide

“The Lord will provide…” Indeed, God provided the ULTIMATE sacrifice for us! However, God did not stop the hands: When the crown of thorns were lifted and placed upon the head of His only Son When the flogs were raised to beat His only Son When the hammers were raised to drive the nails into His only Son’s body When the soldier lifted His spear to thrust it into the side of His only Son. Slide 24

Coming Up The life of Isaac Redemption continues on through Isaac Slide 25
