Presentation transcript:

The Survey Paper ● Survey a research area ● Select papers in the field ● Expose enough information about the survey topic to give the reader a basic idea about the academic field and about what people are currently working on in that field ● Material should be brought together and conclusions should be drawn

Examples of Survey Papers ● ACM Computing Surveys is an obvious place to look ● But the survey you will do will be a lot shorter and less comprehensive than the published surveys there ● Your survey will ● provide an introduction to an academic field, ● address development of the key concepts ● describe what people are currently working on

Two kinds of survey ● Research question; questionnaires; analysis and interpretation of results; hopefully, an answer to the original question ● Survey of the literature, providing a road map to an area – this is the kind of survey you will be doing

Further information ● David Kraybill's Guidelines for dissecting a survey paper ● Jessica Chen-Burger's notes on survey writing ● Type something like “how do I write a survey paper” into a search engine ● For your paper, I would suggest using not fewer than 15 and not more than about 30 references ● Assessment criteria for the survey paper on the SEM1020/CHM1320 website

Happy Survey Writing!
