Presentation transcript:

The Metric System The Metric System is a system of measurement based on the number 10. These measurements include: Length: the distance between two points. Volume: the amount of space an object takes up. Mass: the amount of matter in an object. Temperature: the measure of hotness or coldness.

What are the main units for these measurements? Length: Meter (m) Volume: Liter (L) or cubic meter (m3) Mass: Gram (g) Temperature: degree Celsius (0C) Time: seconds (s)

Basic Comparsions A tall tree is roughly 40 m An average 12 year old is 1.5 m A meter stick is 1 m. Width of your pink is .01 m Thickness of paper is less than .001 m How many meters long is a paperclip?

What was the problem? The paperclip was too small to measure with a meter stick. No Worries! The metric system can be multipled or divided by multiples of 10 to measure objects that are bigger or smaller!

What are these multiples called? Giga- G Mega- M Kilo- K Hecto- H Deka- D (Base Unit) m,L,g Deci- d Centi- c Milli- m Micro- μ Nano n

Abbreviations Meter (m) Gram (g) Liter (L) Kilo- (K) Kilometer (Km) Kilogram (Kg) Kiloliter (KL) Hecto- (H) Hectometer (Hm) Hectogram (Hg) Hectoliter (HL) Deka- (D) Dekameter (Dm) Dekagram (Dg) Dekaliter (DL) Base deci- (d) decimeter (dm) decigram (dg) Deciliter (dL) centi- (c) centimeter (cm) centigram (cg) centiliter (cL) milli- (m) millimeter (mm) milligram (mg) milliliter (mL)

Conversions Giga- G Base x 1,000,000,000 Mega- M Base x 1,000,000 Kilo- K Base x 1000 Hecto- H Base x 100 Deka- D Base x 10 (Base Unit) m,L,g Base Deci- d Base x .1 Centi- c Base x .01 Milli- m Base x .001 Micro- μ Base x .000001 Nano n Base x .000000001

Here is the shortcut way!

English Equivalents

Why might the metric system be more useful? 1. Easier to convert. You are using only multiples of 10. 2. Universal throughout the world and science field.

Practice! 341 Km = __?___ cm 34,100 cm 2. 5761.1 mL = __?__ HL
