American Political Parties Democrats, Republicans, Greens, Libertarians, Independents and More

Political Party A group of persons who seek to control government through the winning of elections and the holding of public office.

Interest Groups Private organizations whose members share certain views and work to shape public policy. Examples include: -PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) -NRA (National Rifle Association) -NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) -Amnesty International (Working to Protect Human Rights)

Mass Media Those means of communication that reach large audiences, especially television, radio, printed publications, and the Internet.

Electoral Process The process by which eligible voters select the men and women who they want to represent them at all levels of government-local, county, state and national.

Two-Party System A political system dominated by two major political parties.

Third Parties The term used in the United States for any and all parties not affiliated with the two major political parties-Democrats and Republicans.

Gerrymandering The drawing of electoral district lines to the advantage of a party or group.

Presidential System A form of government in which the executive and legislative branches of the government are separate, independent, and coequal.

Campaign Finance All funds that are raised and spent in order to promote candidates, parties, or policies in some sort of electoral contest.
