´Sydhavn is a part of Copenhagen. Copenhagen regional plan from 1947 The ´Five-finger Plan´ is still a fundamental plan for Copenhagen. The plan was created by the Danish Town Planning Institute. The “Five-finger Plan” nickname is a product of its resemblance to a hand.´ Fingers represents city districts. In between fingers represents green area. Thumb finger: distinguish men from most animals the only finger that easily touches other fingers makes life much easier SYDHAVN is and will be the thumb finger. Working class history–working with hands - thumb Valbypark & Tippen – Green area etc.. SYDHAVN Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis Green area city districts

HOW CAN NEW INTERACTIVE LIGHTING GATES WITH REFERENCE TO THE HISTORY OF SYDHAVN AND THE “FIVE FINGER PLAN” IMPROVE THE IMAGE AND EXPERIENCE OF SYDHAVN? PROBLEM DEFINITION Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis

Sydhavn welcomes you. Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis As can be seen on the “Five-finger plan”, the “finger” that Sydhavn is located on, is the Thumb finger. Imagine if you didn't have the Thumb finger!

Precisely Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis The history is like a fingerprint.

Hypothesis The spirit of Sydhavns history and “The five finger plan” can with the help of Interactive Lighting strengthen the image and experience of Sydhavn. Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis

The first goal is to make Scandiagade a live and a better street for the inhabitants in Sydhavn. Final goal is to make Scandiagate a proud street that welcomes all and is worth to be one of the gates to Sydhavn. Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis

The lighting on the empty end walls will highlight things linked to Sydhavns history. The lower part is telling stories about earthbound things in Sydhavn history (buildings, the railway, the harbor and so on). The upper part is telling about abstract things in Sydhavns history (planning, hospitality, living, health… The lover part is fixed on etch wall and only the light is controlled by the movements of people moving in front of the walls. The upper part is more free and changeable. If the lover part of the wall is the body of man then the upper part is his mind/spirit. Body and soul. Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis

There are 8 empty end walls in Scandiagade between Borgmester Christansens Gade and Sydhavnsgade. These empty walls are a kind of landmark for this neighborhood. They will all be lighted up with interactive lighting. All the walls are divided in two parts by a down lighting line that represents the boundary between the sky and the earth. (Houses, harbor, railways, the horizon…..This light is controlled by the movement in front of the wall and the light lines tell stories from Sydhavn. All the empty walls have a house opposite where you can have a projectors that are able to project on the walls. These projectors can be interactive and controlled by the movement in front of the wall. One of 8 empty end walls in Scandiagade Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis

Just one of those walls (W-1) is facing South West the others are facing North East. The dawn lighting line that dived the wall resamples sails and the sea. The history tells about Danish people climbing masts on sailboats. Now people are climbing walls. The wall (W-1) is used as a Activities Climbing Wall. There are two kind of climbing points on this wall. Above the ´Sails´ there are lighting stars but in the lover part the climbing points are like brick stones coming out of the wall. The lower part is lighted up by the down light coming from the ´Sails´ and the sea. The shadows from the lower climbing points makes a pattern on the wall that is dynamic as the lighting from the ´light line´ is interactive and controlled by the movement in front of the wall. W-1. Climbing wall Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis

The end wall facing Sydhavnsgade (W-2) is used to capture the attention of people passing by. The dawn light line can resemble houses and harbor. The Sign Language on the wall tells you that you are welcome to Sydhavn. The light on the wall is interactive and is controlled by the movements of people walking or biking on Sydhavnsgade in front of the wall. (see video) During daylight the empty walls are not lighted up. Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis W-2. To day the light level is about 20 lux in the streets but on the grass under the trees it is under 10 lux. The design is based on the plan to make Scandiagade a history lane and/or an activity street. New lights are used in the middle of the grass area and a special lights are under the trees. Minimum light is set to 20 lux on open area and 100 lux at the squares. Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis

Sydhavn has a positive potential regarding new interactive lighting to improve the image and experience of Sydhavn. Creating with Light: Interactive Lighting LiD8 AAU CPH – SEMESTER PROJECT- SYDHAVN. Supervision: Georgios Triantafyllidis

All the Gates to Sydhavn have there one fingerprints and that is the over all design for all the Gates to Sydhavn. Planning has the purpose to guide the way into the future and the History will tell the true story. The ‘Five finger plan’ was a good plan and the History confirms that.
