PROJECT WORK “HISTORY OF CANADA”

The Goal of Research The Goal of the Research is to learn out more about Canada, its history and people, who discovered, described and mapped lands of Canada.

The tasks The tasks are to learn books and articles about Canada, to look for different examples of descriptions of its history in the original literature, to classify examples, to analyze, to raise interest and motivation to learning English. The subject, the object The subject of the research is Canada, the object is historic man of Canada.

Leif Ericson Leif Ericson was a Norse explorer regarded as the first European to land in North America (excluding Greenland), nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. According to the Sagas of Icelanders, he established a Norse settlement at Vinland, tentatively identified with the Norse L'Anse aux Meadows on the northern tip of Newfoundland in modern-day Canada.

João Fernandes Lavrador João Fernandes Lavrador was a Portuguese explorer of the late 15th century. He was the first modern explorer in the coasts of the Northeast of Northern America, including the Labrador peninsula, which bears his name.

John Cabot John Cabot was an Italian navigator and explorer whose 1497 discovery of parts of North America under the commission of Henry VII of England is commonly held to have been the first European encounter with the mainland of North America since the Norse Vikings visits to Vinland in the eleventh century. The official position of the Canadian and British governments is that he landed on the island of Newfoundland.

Jacques Cartier Jacques Cartier was a French explorer of Breton origin who claimed what is now Canada for France. Jacques Cartier was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River, which he named "The Country of Canadas", after the Iroquois names for the two big settlements he saw at Stadacona (Quebec City) and at Hochelaga (Montreal Island).

Martin Frobisher Martin Frobisher was an English seaman who made three voyages to the New World to look for the Northwest Passage. Though Frobisher didn't discover the Northwest Passage, he studied the nature of icebergs and then drew a conclusion that melting of the icebergs give fresh water, so they arise on land and then slip in the sea.

Henry Hudson In 1607, the Muscovy Company of England hired Hudson to find a northerly route to the Pacific coast of Asia. Henry Hudson was the first European who mapped coasts of North America.

Lui Geber Lui Geber was the first settler. He made his home in Quebec.

Conclusion Having read many articles in books and magazines about history of Canada, we have learnt out who was the discoverer, who was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, who studied the nature of icebergs, who mapped coasts of North America.
