Presentation transcript:

Daewoo Global Markets US Markets Eurozone European stocks closed lower on Thursday after the European Central Bank (ECB) kept interest rates on h old and did not extend its asset purchase program. The ECB kept its benchmark refinancing rate at 0 percent and also did not change its trillion-euro bond- buying plan, saying the program will run until the end of March 2017 or beyond if necessary. Investors had expected the central bank to extend quantitative easing. In a media conference, ECB Presi dent Mario Draghi said the central bank did not discuss an extension of its asset purchase plan U.S. stocks on Thursday closed lower after the European Central Bank kept key interest rates steady but dis appointed some by not announcing additional measures to boost Europe’s sluggish economy. Oil prices surged to settle up $2.12, or 4.7%, at $47.62 a barrel following the largest drop in weekly inven tories since 1999 (declined by 14.5 million barrel, reported by EIA). Analysts polled by S&P Global Platts exp ected a 425,000-barrel climb. The ECB’s policy inaction, so far, has been a blow to risk appetite, with some analysts suggesting that the absence of additional new stimulus by the ECB may give the Federal Reserve more room for tighter monetar y policy. Economy: Market reaction to weekly jobless claims (fell by 4,000 to a two-month low of 259,000, forec ast 265,000), which showed layoffs remained at historic lows, was minimal. Consumer credit jumped in July (rose $17.7 billion in July, economists had expected a $16.0 billion rise), the Fed announced, adding hop e that spending will remain a key factor in speeding economic growth.
