Organizing a Speech
4 Types of Speeches 1. Impromptu- speech given with little or no preparation 2. Manuscript- read directly word for word from a script
3. Memorized- given directly from memory (Disadvantage: memory failure) 4. Extemporaneous- speech designed to be given from a few key words and should be presented differently based on your audience
Organizing your speech I. Introduction II. Body – 3 points/Paragraphs III. Conclusion/Summary
First part of a speech: Introduction I. First part of a speech: Introduction (should accomplish 5 tasks) n Forge a bond with audience n Establish credibility and goodwill n Create interest in speech n Preview speech by introducing main points n “Hook” audience by grabbing their attention
How to format of an introduction A. - have an “Attention Getter” B. – create a Thesis statement- Focus on what your speech is going to address C. – make a ‘Preview statement’ sentence which highlights main points or steps
Things to consider in an intro? n Appropriateness: Does Attention-Getter seem to fit with the overall tone of the speech? –For example, a humorous opening may not be appropriate if the topic is tragic or super-serious. n Effectiveness: Does the Attention-Getter contribute to the overall point of the speech? –For example, an irrelevant statistic might even distract from the point the speaker is trying to make. n Connectedness: Does the speaker have an easy time connecting the Attention-Getter to the opening paragraph and to the point? –For example, if the speaker has to strain to connect the Attention-Getter, another try or another type is probably worth considering.
Types of Attention Getters : 1. Narrative: Telling a story 2. Quotation: The use of someone else's words. –Example: Abigail Adams once said that “Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.” 3. Startling statement: A statement that gets attention with use of facts or statistics that seam unreal. –Example: As of December 2004 there are an estimated 39.4 million people living with AIDS in the world.
Story n Three years ago I was invited to join a group of individuals that were of diverse faiths. These wonderful people each have different beliefs and worship individually according to their faiths traditions. One thing that they all share is their faith's version of the Golden Rule. This is the one thing that each faith group has in common. From this one strong principle we have been able to build bridges of understanding, respect, support and kindness, to treat others the way we would like to be treated; and to treat others the way we would like them to treat our children or our parents.
Quotes n Eldridge Cleaver: Quotes on Respect Respect commands itself and it can neither be given nor withheld when it is due. n Laurence Sterne: Quotes on Respect Respect for ourselves guides our morals; respect for others guides our manners. n Harry S. Truman: Quotes on Respect We must build a new world, a far better world - one in which the eternal dignity of man is respected.
Statistics n There are many different types of families, today. Here are some statistics to keep in mind: n one million children will see their parents separate or divorce this year; n 1.4 million children are being raised by their grandparents; n nearly 500,000 children are in foster care at any one time; n one million children live with adoptive parents; n 6 to 10 million children have lesbian, gay, and bisexual parents.
Body: 5 II. The Body: 5 Styles of Formats 1. Chronological - time sequence ( ex. Past, present, future) 2. Climactic order - order of importance ( least important to most important)
3. Comparison and Contrast- items arranged to show similarities and differences 4. Problem/Solution - inform audiences about a problem and then offer solutions
5. Topical- items which have no real link to each other and when put together help form body of speech Ex. I want to explain 3 types of government… 1.Democratic 2. Dictatorship 3. Oligarchy
III. The End of Speech Conclusion - should summarize 1. Post View – restate main points, 2.Tie Back – relate to introduction
Outline I. Introduction A.Attention Getter: B.Topic/Thesis C.Preview: II. Body A.1 st Point B.2 nd Point C.3 rd Point III. Conclusion A.Post View B. Tie Back/Summary
