What is Microsoft Excel? Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application offering calculations, graphing and charting tools, and many other useful features. Proficiency in this application is extremely important in any career. Specifically, teachers and administrators can use Microsoft Excel to: Organize school-wide data Calculate student grades Create schedules with dates and times Display results from surveys and assessments Log important documentation And much more!

Opening Microsoft Excel Click the Start menu (lower left-hand corner) Click in the search bar (“Search programs and files”). Type Excel Left click on the application.

Opening Microsoft Excel When Microsoft Excel is opened, users will see this menu of templates. There are a number of different Excel templates available. Recommendation for a Beginner: Blank workbook

Blank Workbook This is the universal layout of a “Blank Workbook.” A COLUMN is identified by a LETTER and a ROW is identified by a NUMBER.

Enlarging a Workbook If a workbook is too small (for their preference), a user can enlarge it. In the LOWER, RIGHT-HAND CORNER, there is a scale similar to this one. Simply, adjust the scale to the desired magnification.

Saving a Workbook (General) Click File (upper-left hand corner). Click Save (5 th option down). Select a destination to save your workbook (Ex: Computer, Desktop, Documents, etc.). Enter a File name and click Save.

Saving a Workbook (to the H Drive) Click File (upper-left hand corner). Click Save (5 th option down). Select Computer and then find the Network Location that displays STUXXXXXX (  H Drive). Enter a File name and click Save.

Identifying a Cell A CELL is a single box in a spreadsheet. Users can identify a cell by combining a letter with a number. The letter ALWAYS comes BEFORE the number.

Identifying a Cell For example, the cell shown here is A1. Fun Fact: There are an INFINITE number of cells in a spreadsheet.

Time for some practice! Grab a partner and match the numbers in front of you with their respective cells. READY…SET…

Formatting the Font, Font Size, and Font Style Microsoft Excel is one of several Microsoft Office applications and as a result, it shares many features with other applications, such as Word, PowerPoint, and Access. The universal approach to formatting aspects, such as font, font size, and font style is very beneficial for Excel users. For anyone who has used other Microsoft applications, such as Word and PowerPoint, this section will be very straight forward.

Default Font, Font Size, and Font Style The default font of a blank workbook is generally CALIBRI. However, there are different versions of Excel and consequently, there are different default fonts. The default font size of a blank workbook is generally 11. As with any Microsoft Office program, blank documents, blank presentations, and blank workbooks never have a font style until a user selects one.

How to Format the Font of a Workbook 1.Select the cell desired for formatting. 2.If a user RIGHT CLICKS in the cell, both a DROP DOWN MENU and a FONT PALETTE will appear.

How to Format the Font of a Workbook 3.Within the font palette, use the FONT BOX to type in a desired font or click the DROP DOWN MENU to select a desired font. 4.Once done, click out of the newly- formatted cell.
